Like a Scolded Child

OK, So I deleted my post.  I confessed to hiding Pyrex at a thrift.  I was waiting for it to go on sale b/c it's too expensive...then I was gonna possibly trade it.  Some one made a comment that made me feel bad, and I am going to go "Unhide" the Pyrex at the little thrift and leave it for someone else or buy it.  I guess I didn't think of it as something that major...now I realize I need to think it through.  I'm curious if other's have "Hidden" things they want to go back for later?

  1. Oh my gosh Stacey, I had no intention of making you feel badly. I apologize for that! I figured since you said "I bet you've done it to" (and you are still asking if people have) that you were opening up the discussion and so I responded to it. I'm sure plenty of people have hidden things that they want for themselves. I've just never done it and I guess I don't fully understand why others do it? If I didn't or couldn't buy something, I would leave it for another Pyrex lover (because that's what I would hope someone else would do for me and I would feel badly for the owners of the establishment too)---that was my only reasoning! I'm curious now to see what other collectors say about it too. I bet I will be the one little fishy swimming against the pool of all the other fish:( I bet I might be the only one over the years who hasn't hid stuff before...and now that I am posting this response, I will look like the bad guy in all of this when all I wanted to do was respond to the discussion I thought you were opening up:(

  2. No, it's good. You made me think...and your right. I think I get annoyed at this particular place b/c they make the prices so high that no one can afford, and so I hid it so I could afford it. But you are right, it's not fair. I am curious if others have circumed to this particular temptation. And please don't feel like that bad guy. If anything, you brought up a good point. I think it's easy when people over price stuff or the "pickens" are slim to do stuff we normally wouldn't do. AND on top of that, I just checked my calendar and in the throws of PMS BIG TIME LOL. Pyrex and PMS don't mix. But heck, what does mix with PMS. Please don't take offense, Holiday Girl. You made a great point and I'm following your lead. :)

  3. No worries ladies! No one is a bad guy! :)

I can't remember hiding Pyrex, but I know I have hidden things I wanted that did not want someone else to take. :)

  4. I understand wanting to hide it, but I think the best thing to do if you can't afford a piece is to just let it go to somebody else that can. I know we collectors can get competitive, but we have to remember that there will always be another one in the future! If you can't afford the one in front of you, just be patient - you'll eventually find what you need at the right price! I know I get *so* impatient, but this is supposed to be a thrifty hobby for me, so I just remind myself to be patient...I'm usually rewarded eventually :-)

  5. Aww, don't be so hard on yourself. It is so tempting! I haven't hidden any pyrex, but I think we can all say we have shuffled some clothing around at the mall (whether on purpose or because we were too lazy to go put it back). You are a passionate collector who wants the pyrex to go to a good home :)

  6. Stacey, it appears that there are two sides to every story. It just depends on the view. There is a bowl I want at a local antique store. I check on it every time I am in there. Nobody has bought it and at that price I am think nobody will so I keep hoping for it to come down. As far as hiding, I don't think any of us could honestly say what we would do in the same situation. We may think we wouldn't but then again, if we wanted it bad enough, maybe we would. Don't feel bad about it.

  7. Personally I never have hid a Pyrex before in a thrift/antique store. If I can't buy it then why should I hid it? I understand what you mean Stacy but for me there is so much Pyrex out there and even though I see tons of it at antique shops that are well overpriced I just think to myself hmm maybe when I go thrifting this weekend I will find something better or the same! That is the fun in all of it just wondering what youll find. I am sure there are people that hid Pyrex in the stores but honestly it isn't fair for the others. But don't worry its not a crime! If you changed your mind about the whole thing then its up to you!

  8. Please! I find so many things that have been hidden at thrifts, retail stores (clothes), consignments stores....you are not alone! I'm not saying I condone doing it, but I thnk it is more the norm than not. Hopefully, you'll have some good Pyrex karma and it will still be waiting for you!

  9. Great comments! I'm glad to hear all this. I honestly hadn't thought about the other side of it...and this was the first time I've hidden Pyrex. I will not do it again. I would LOVE to have so much Pyrex to choose from as some have mentioned. But it WILL eventually come around again...I agree. And no more hiding for me! It's interesting to hear other's thoughts on it :)

  10. I've hidden one bowl before and it totally was gone when I returned a few days later. It taught me a lesson that hiding is not necessary because either a Pyrex-hunter found it or a store worker discovered it and moved it back to its proper location. I understand the desire to hide but I agree with what some other people have said...I wouldn't want other people hiding Pyrex on me.

  11. I don't see anything wrong with it. All's fair in love and Pyrex. Pyrex collecting is a fun hobby and I don't think that there should be "rules". My thrifts are so cheap that I don't have to hide anything, but if I were ever in the position where I forgot my wallet...you bet that I would hide it until I got back. And if it so happens that another collector found it, congrats!!! It's not that serious!

  12. I honestly never even thought of hiding anything. I wouldn't do it though. Like others have stated, if I can't afford it at the time, it's better to leave it there for someone else to purchase. I don't think it's necessarily dishonest to hide an item, but I don't think it's "right". You are bound to come across that adored item at some point in time.
I look at it like this...if it is meant to be, it will be there waiting for you when you return.
    Happy Pyrex thrifting! :)
