Pyrex Pendant - Roosters

Having hunted Pyrex for years and coming to the point I have more that I know where to put, I have been parting with a lot of my collection.  Even then I have a lot!  Being the crafty type I am, I decided to try my hand a making pendants from Pyrex shards as I'm experienced at making them from the fused glass I make.  It's been lots of fun and I've been sharing my creations on Facebook, my blog and pinterest and was encouraged to make some for sale for my Etsy shop.  Now I have gone as far as to start trading my excess Pyrex for shards.  It's amazing how many people hold onto their broken dishes, even then, they still can't seem to part with them.  It's a wonderful thing for me to be able to extend the life of some of these dishes by making jewelry.  I thought I'd post my story with my latest piece.  This pendant is going to the person that was kind enough to send me her broken dish.  The pendant is wrapped with 18K gold plated wire and embellished with amber, black onyx and pearl. 

Latest Finds (Hint: My Heart Raced)

I did some hunting this past Thursday and Friday. Thursday my husband went in to a Goodwill while he was out and about on business and found a Pink Daisy 043; I already have one so I am going to try and trade it for another piece on my wish list. That same day the owner of one of my favorite "hidden" junk shops (she keeps a list of things people are looking for, and you know I am in it) called and told me she had "some blue pyrex with little people" and did I want to come take a look? Well yes, I did. Even though I am not a huge fan of Butterprint I know I can trade it later on. The Pink Daisy Open Baker was amazing! I am awaiting a trade for the 045 in this print an then, I am happy to say, I will have every Pink Daisy piece. I can't pass up a 503, especially with a lid, so the Spring Blossom jumped in my cart and came home with me.

Yes, a Black Rooster 575 SpaceSaver.

My husband and I had gone out to lunch for Valentine's Day, once again to our favorite restaurant. On the way home we hit some thrift stores, just as we had done the previous week after having lunch on Friday at this restaurant. Do you see a trend here? Last week I found my Snowflake Open Baker, this week, the Black Rooster. I told him we will have to keep going back every Friday, it is a lucky charm.

Anyway, he waited in the car while I ran into the thrift. I almost passed out when I saw it on the shelf. I grabbed it and clutched it tightly, then took a picture, then flipped it over for the price: $4. Well, it just so happens that it was customer loyalty card day, so I saved 25%, making it a grand total of $3 and change for tax. My heart was racing so fast! I went out of the store, crossed the parking lot in my patented "I am so excited with my find so I will run-walk" to my husband in the car, and started kind of yelling to get my husband's attention. He looked up, I held up the dish, cracked a huge grin, got in the car, and just kind of did a little OMGing in a very excited manner.

Percolater Parts! I found them all!

I found where all those percolator parts are hiding. In a dinky town in the middle of Michigan! That is where I found all these (I didn't buy all of them!) at a flea market. 

They have bodies of percolators too.

I had a blast thifting in a different state last month.

  I didn't like having to take this all on a plane with me.

While on vacation I spent a few days in Flint, Michigan. 

 I am sorry to all who live there. Your thrift stores are junk. I hope you all are finding more than I did.  At least you have fatty amazing food.

I did however come home with this guy:

My Mother-in-law gave him to me.  Along with metal lid and glass lid. I just need the cradle. 

 I think she may like me. I got very lucky to have such a wonderful Mother-in-law.

I Dream of Pyrex

Hi PC3, SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

I know you all will understand this- and probably no one else will!

I dream about Pyrex. I had a dream where I was looking for the charcoal Snowflake space saver and I went to this underground flea market (I know, weird) and saw it, but couldn't buy it.

Anyway, ever since then I have been obsessed with finding that Snowflake piece. I went to all the local thrifts, and didn't find it. You can probably guess where this is going...

I ended up buying it on eBay. I just couldn't stop thinking about it, and had to have it. The great thing about eBay is you know it will be available. The bad thing about that is that you really can't get a good idea of the condition. Sometimes it's hard to tell from a photo if a piece has been run through the dishwasher (and I have seen plenty of those on eBay- it makes me laugh at the seller's descriptions- 'marbled'? 'rustic'? LOL- as I'm crying inside for the poor Pyrex.) That, plus the risk of shipping something breakable makes it a bit too much of a chance for me sometimes. But like I said, I was obsessed!

So I bit the bullet and actually won an auction for this one. It's the smaller (shallow-er) of the space savers. Up until now, I didn't know they came in two sizes. I have to say I'm liking the shallow ones, because I can stack more of them in limited space ;). I paid $11.50 for it, which isn't too bad I guess, but certainly more than I would have paid in a thrift store. It was in absolutely mint condition, and arrived safely. Win!

While I was browsing through eBay, I also decided I wanted to buy the Butterprint butter dish. I have been looking for this in the wild for years and never seen it. I hate giving up on the hunt, but I have a feeling I'll never find it. (Of course, watch me find it in the next couple of weeks.) I put in a bid and then got caught up in my excitement of winning the snowflake and completely forgot that I had bid on the butter dish. 

Well, surprise! I won that too. Also in mint condition, thank goodness. 

So my dream came true in a roundabout sort of way...

It makes me really happy to look at my new pieces and I am sleeping better at night. :)

Pink and Turquoise? How did that happen?

So with all the good luck I had with thrift store Pyrex last week, I needed to re-arrange my cabinet display. It has become obvious that I seem to be accumulating a lot of pink and turquoise Pyrex with a bit of black. And I gotta say, I love this color combination.

Who would've thought it? When I started collecting Pyrex, I started with the Primary set of bowls and am still working on the fridgie set. I always thought that would be 'my thing', the original set and the bright colors. Because normally, I'm not a pastel pink and turquoise kinda girl. But then I inherited a couple Butterprint Cinderella bowls and started working on that set.

I had the Starburst promo from way back (even before I became afflicted with this Pyrexia) so thank goodness I can check that off my list without even thinking. And no, I'm not trading it or selling it now. :)

And things kind of happened and I found a bunch of pink Pyrex. No one in their right mind is going to leave that on the shelf, right? Mix in a few black pieces, which I love (like my black fridgie and the Rooster black promo piece) and, well, I've got a theme happening here I think.

I did a little re-arranging in my glass-front cabinets (last time was back in October):

The late afternoon sunlight was hitting the Butterprint fridgies just right and really looked cool, so I thought I'd snap a picture to share with you.

If you had told me a year ago that I would now be trying to collect pink, black and turquoise I would have thought you were crazy. But that is how it goes, and now at least I have a bit of direction to my collection obsession! Anyone else ever have their Pyrex collecting go in a completely different direction than you thought?

New Kitchen Cabinet Display

One of the things I love best about collecting kitchen items is displaying them in my glass-fronted cabinets. When we bought this house, having cabinets like these was on my wish list. (It definitely wouldn't have been a deal-breaker for sure, but it helped when we looked at this house!)

So it was a perfect place to display some of my collections. For a while I collected printed glassware (another post on that coming soon), and I inherited some really neat red and yellow pottery, which went with my kitchen's yellow, green and red color scheme. Those made a nice display for a while. But lately I've been collecting Pyrex, FireKing and jadeite, and decided to re-organize my displays to better reflect that.

That meant moving things around and re-thinking what I reallly wanted to look at for a while. It took me the better part of a rainy afternoon last week to finally settle on a layout, so to document that, I thought I'd show you all.

Here's the before:

Not too bad, really, but not as organized as I would like. Some of these things have been in the same spot for ten years! Also the clear glassware at the top right kind of disappears. (It's really neat close-up, with etched stars, but would be better put away somewhere else.) You can see the printed glassware all jumbled in the lower right. I figured, since you can't really make it all out, maybe it's best if I put most of it away and only get out only one set at a time.

I tried to organize it by color a little bit, with the red and yellow pottery near the yellow and green Fiesta. Then the jadeite and Peach Blossom FireKing (which is a match made in heaven, I think), then the Pyrex on the right.

The Fiestaware is not old (mostly), and our regular everyday dishes, so they have to be easily accessible.

This is probably my favorite one, with the FireKing and jadeite. The printed glasses in the carrier are the only ones to make the cut right now. You can see some of the Pyrex holiday mugs sneaking into the picture there- guess they wanted a bit of face time in the FireKing cabinet, LOL!

The Pyrex cabinet. I am trying really hard to limit myself to just the primary colors set  (I'm using the yellow 404 at the moment, so it's not pictured) and turquoise Butterprint, plus pink and promotional designs. The lone FireKing wheat casserole in the lower right belonged to my dad, so it still gets a place of honor.

Right now, I'm pretty happy with it and it is a nice change of scenery!

A great day for Pyrex!

Hi all, SusieQT here from Practice in Time! I can't believe this is my second post in a little over a week here talking about promotional Pyrex- it's been good shopping around these parts lately.

Yesterday, I went with my pal MaryDeluxe to my first ever auction! It was kind of a weird set of circumstances, as I actually knew the lady whose estate was being auctioned off and ended up buying a bunch of her vintage clothing for my Etsy shop. The lady had been a hoarder (she wasn't really that bad yet when I met her 30 years ago) and also had a ton of crap in boxes. I ended up buying a bunch of box lots and came home with some cheap Pyrex.

I bought one box for $3 which contained the yellow and green primary mixing bowls, plus my first ever pink fridgie! The bowls are definitely one of the older sets of primary, with the round stamp on the bottom. The yellow bowl has a '48' right above the PYREX stamp, and the green has a '24'- does anyone know if this is earlier or later than the round stamp without the #?

The fridgie is a 502 with an old style lid. It's in great shape, and except for a 1 qt pink gooseberry casserole is the only pink Pyrex I own. I am so excited to have found it!

After we got done at the auction I took MaryD to my favorite thrift store, or as she aptly named it "Thrift Store Mecca". Since it was late on a Saturday afternoon, most of the good merch had been pretty well picked over, but we did come away with some neat stuff. This is the same thrift store I found the "Vintage/Grapes" promo casserole in my last post here.

After passing up some of the same items as last time (set of Woodland bowls for $$$, misc. Butterfly Gold for $$) I found this Black Rooster promo dish with its cradle for $6.50. To me, that is pretty reasonable and since this pattern is so closely related to Butterprint (it came out in the same year- 1958) I scooped it up. The handles on the cradle are cork, which I haven't ever seen.

I have never had a piece of black Pyrex before either, so I had to take a photo of the happy couple!
