Oh, the Horror

Dear Goodwill,

On behalf of Pyrex lovers everywhere, stop the madness! Are you a thrift store or an antique store? Who's pricing your items? Do they know that eBay prices are usually the result of borosilicate sniffing tweakers?

Today, for the first time, I visited one of your stores in north Seattle and was horrified to find every single Pyrex dish priced at $14.99. If you're going to price them that high at least have the decency to give that high price point to the more desirable dishes likes pinks or aquas. Or ones without 5,000 scratches that grandma had pressure washed in her new dishwasher. Boy, did you kill my buzz. Then, my father called me from a store fifty miles to the south, where prices are usually more reasonable, and told me that he had seen a beautiful dish today (his design description made me think it was a one of a kind piece but that was my optimistic mind playing tricks on me) that was priced at, wait for it, $14.99! An entire strip of Goodwills on the I-5 corridor have lost their minds.

Now, I have not totally lost my love for you. I visited your mothership Seattle store and did find, after waiting for the new bins to be wheeled out, a beautiful burgundy chop platter of Pyrex dinnerware and a nice lime green dinner plate. Their prices were in the single digits. I can handle that. You also had enough on the shelves that a girl could believe she might find something beautiful hiding behind that imitation Homer Laughlin plate. I still felt the excitement building as I drove into your parking lot. The romance is also still on because your most northern Washington stores are also still in the land of reality. My sister-in-law still calls me occasionally saying something like this, "I'm looking at a little Pyrex bowl that has orange dots on it. It's in great shape. It's $7.99. Should I get it?" to which I reply, "Get it?! You need to stick it down your shirt and keep it at body temperature until you can get it to me. DO NOT LET YOUR ADORABLE CHILDREN GET WITHIN FIVE FEET OF IT." So, while my hope down here has been slowly circling the drain, I know sanity will eventually prevail.
Hope lives on thanks to my sister-in-law! This was also 1/2 off!
So, no offense, but I'm gonna take a little break from "us." It's definitely you, not me. You need to come to grips with reality and see the Pyrex sitting on the shelf longer at those ridiculous prices. You need to look inward and ask, "How can I attract more customers? Why are they recoiling in horror when they look at my tags? She used to come see me more than once a week. Maybe it's not the morning ammonia and old mothball smell that's keeping her away." No, it's not religion that is driving me to Saint Vincent de Paul's and The Salvation Army although the angels did seem to sing a chorus when I found that flamingo pink cake pan on the shelf for $3.99 and the cashier threw in the matching lid for free because she thought it was silly that they were priced separately.

Your current motto wraps this all up perfectly: "It's a bigger deal than you think." Yes, it is most definitely a bigger deal than you think.

Tentatively yours,

Nicole

P.S. If you raise the prices on the Mason jars too than we are finally through.

  1. Well, I freaking love your post. I've mentioned a few times on this blog that I live in Seattle and I think I've actually written this letter in my mind a few times (albeit with a lot less wit and a lot more grouchiness). Well done.

Now I'm wondering if you and I are passing each other in the aisles, frantically scanning the same shelves...

  2. I'm in Seattle too. I think there's a lot of us collectors in the area, but I still don't see that as an excuse for such insane prices. I always pass these pieces up at these ridiculous prices, especially since they only seem to be the less desirable patterns (at least to me). I seem to find my best pieces outside of goodwill these days.

    1. The ones I saw today were all either avocado greens or Early American. So, not the most vintage or popular patterns. I think that's why I was most surprised that they were priced so high. My best luck lately has been a St. Vincent de Paul's and, sometimes, I buy things from shopgoodwill Tacoma and pick them up so I don't have to pay shipping. I've had some good local Etsy deals too. Where do you go?

  3. Yes! Thanks so much for speaking on behalf of all of us Pyrexers out there! At least you have Pyrex on your shelves at Goodwill. All the Goodwill's in my area now are selling theirs online.

  6. It's also becoming a problem in the North Carolina Goodwills. Good luck even finding any!

  8. Haha this is hilarious! I totally feel the same way! I think people in my area have begun to stay away from high prices and wait until they go down in price, but I guess there are always a few people who WILL pay those high prices and ruin it for all of us!
