January Snowflakes

I know the holidays are over, but with freezing rain and snow in the forecast, plus early dark nights, I can't help but keep my lights on through January.

I found this snowflake casserole, sans lid, for only $2 the other day at a local thrift shop. It was pretty beat up, but as per the recommendations, I used a little Bar Keepers Friend on it and got most of the metal marks off of it. It's still pretty scratched up, but I think it adds to the charm. I also think it makes me less bothered to actually use the dish in the oven -- not that I have been cooking much these days... I think the holidays wore me out!

In the meantime, I've found a few other uses for the casserole around my apartment.

The person who owned this piece prior to me obviously used it thoroughly by the looks of it. I wonder what they cooked in it? I sometimes wish they had left their favorite recipe inside -- it might help to get me out of the January cooking funk! I also wonder if someone simply picked up the piece for the holidays, then donated it as soon as they scuffed it up!

Do you ever wonder about the personal history of the piece of Pyrex you picked up -- or is that just me?

  1. I wonder all the time!!! Who used it? When was the last time they used it, was it stored in someones attic for years?, what they cooked in it? You are not alone! I also wish they left some recipes, that would be really neat! I love your snowflake, I have two of them myself and used them at Christmas time (only to serve)It looks like you took all of it off!

    1. Glad it's not just me ;) I definitely did some scrubbing on the inside! I should have taken a 'before' photo, but was so anxious to clean it. I think that's why it was so marked down. It would have been at least $5, even without the lid, at this thrift store if it had been more presentable.

    2. Even at $5 would have been a good deal! But it looks great! You did a good job!

  2. I sometimes wonder too. I found a turquoise on white last October and paid $5 sans lid, so I think you did very well for $2. I used mine for holding gift-tags when I was wrapping presents - it made me smile when I looked at it.

  4. Great uses! Love the knitting needles & yarn in it. Looks like it's waiting for you to make some homemade macaroni & cheese to me. :)

    1. I don't see this pattern too often, actually! I see it in antique stores, and more often it's the blue snowflakes on white, but this was the first time I saw it in a thrift store. (Or maybe this was the first time I ever noticed it?!)
