Deja Vu All Over Again

Several years ago, when I first began collecting Pyrex I had a recurring dream: I was at a sale in a dingy, old, stone basement with junk piled all about. I was digging through what amounted to trash, and found one lone piece of Pyrex- a black snowflake space saver. Of course I grabbed it and promptly woke up. I became obsessed with owning that piece and eventually caved and bought it on ebay. That was about four years ago.

Fast forward to this weekend and I found myself at a sale in a dingy old stone barn with junk piled all about. It was almost exactly like the dream I had. Now, it wasn't really trash, but what some might call rustiques: old furniture, farm equipment, canning jars, pots and pans, all covered with a layer of dirt and mildew. And one lone piece of Pyrex: 

OK, it's not a space saver, but a charcoal snowflake open baker. Maybe even better, because in my experience these are a bit harder to find. And I have been wanting one for a lone time!

So I guess dreams literally do come true sometimes!

Snowflakes in February

It has been rather chilly here in the Old Pueblo---for us, that means high 50s, low 60s. So it seemed apropos to find some snowflakes!

My husband and I went out for lunch. After hitting up our favorite Mexican restaurant (and if you are ever in Tucson, you must go!) we were stuffed…but on the way home I was not too stuffed to ask my husband to pull in at a thrift. Now, I rarely find something at this place but I had a feeling so I ran in while he waited in the car.

The aisles are super long and narrow and the shelves are all shoulder length and below. I made my first pass but couldn't see much because a woman was blocking the aisle and all the bakeware with her cart while she made a thorough examination of the shelves. I scooted around her and by the time I turned around at the end of the aisle and examined what I could on my way back she had moved a couple feet. That's when I saw these, all taped together and hidden somewhat in a much bigger dish. She had been blocking them with her cart on my first pass and had barely moved past them on my second while she examined the next set of shelves. I saw the turquoise peeking out and made my move.

Yes, that is an open baker! Now, it was taped to the bottom with under the 045 with a lid under it, unlike in the picture you see here; I had cut the tape as soon as I got in the car. I thought maybe it was a divided dish. I don't want the divided and I already had the 043 and 045 but after examining the taped mass I had in my hands thought there was no way the 045 could sit in a a divided. Up to the cashier I went. My excitement must have been obvious because he said I looked happy.

And here it is, my open baker! It's so, so pretty and I know I will get a lot of use out of this dish!

Amazing Haul on Last Day of 2013

Husband and little miss went out with me late in the afternoon on December 31. We had to drop off some stuff at the thrift store so we decided to thrift, too.

I got so excited by some of these finds I sat down on the floor and just about hyperventilated.

Little miss, aka my thrifting buddy, found the opal 402 as I was filling out the charitable donation paperwork for the goods we were dropping off. At the next place we all found the Snowflake 045 (which was so filthy I couldn't believe it, my husband is a darling and cleaned it to look like new), the Federal Starburst, the Hazel Atlas Ivy, and be still my heart, the Unmarked Turquoise Diamonds. My husband plucked it off the shelf and he says my breathing just stopped. That was when I had to sit down. Further on he found the Terra mug and the three Hazel Atlas mugs, which are a match for some bowls I inherited from my grandmother.

At the next location I found the Horizon Blue 441 and 442. As I was inspecting them husband said, "Hey, I see an opal pan." I dismissed it but he pulled it off the bottom shelf and then got really excited as he loves Friendship. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would own a lasagna pan, much less a Friendship lasagna pan; in fact, this is the first piece of Friendship I have ever had the pleasure of seeing in person prior to buying. I was already sitting on the floor when he showed it to me so I was well prepared to take it all in. The Butterfly Gold dishes were a nice treat; I have been working on building a mixed collection of BG and Spring Blossom/Crazy Daisy to use as our everyday dishes. This find gets me started on the salad plates which I will add to my dinner plates and bowls.

It was a banner day, one I will not soon forget. Here's to even more fun finds in 2014!

A Single Snowflake

Man things are so sparse here. 

Where has all the Pyrex gone!!!!

Lucky for me I found one piece last week. ONE. 

And I saw a rat where I got it. It got a bath, maybe 3.

I love snowflakes.  At least the one piece I did find was a good one.

Percolater Parts! I found them all!

I found where all those percolator parts are hiding. In a dinky town in the middle of Michigan! That is where I found all these (I didn't buy all of them!) at a flea market. 

They have bodies of percolators too.

I had a blast thifting in a different state last month.

  I didn't like having to take this all on a plane with me.

Pyrex Vacation!

Hi PC3, SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

We recently spent a week and a half at our cabin upstate. One rainy day up there, I cleaned out a lot of the stuff we don't use and took it to a thrift shop in the local town. I dropped off four big trash bags full of stuff! And the bonus was I got to shop at the store too, and this is one little shop that hasn't yet succumbed to the high prices of the big chains. Nothing in the store was more than $2!

You can bet I was super excited to find Pyrex on my vacation- I was going through withdrawal at this point, and these were just what I needed! The snowflake divided dish (with lid!) was $2, the flamingo plate was 25 cents and the turquoise vegetable bowl was $2 at a flea market (more on that later!). I already have the snowflake DD, so this one will be for sale. I'm trying to resist collecting the Pyrex dinnerware, so will have to let the plate and bowl go too (eventually!)

A few finds!

On a recent weekend camping in beautiful Durango, Colorado, my daughter and I had a few Pyrex finds!
There was a flea market on the weekend at their fairgrounds and we scored the turquoise bowl for $3 and the 2.5 quart oval casserole called Hex signs or I also found it called Snowflake, (I like that better) for $5! The casserole is a 1958 promotional and I always snatch those up. We found the Desert Dawn cake dish for $2.99 at a thrift. It was so grimy and had baked on yuck...with some oven cleaner it cleaned up great!

My only find in an antique store was this adorable 2 cup carafe called the Little Gold Jug (1958)! I love the carafes and this is the second one we have found. My daughter kept the first one because her birthday is on St. Patrick's Day, naturally I wanted one too! I plan on using this one for syrup.

Then today I stopped in on an estate sale and got this 403 turquoise beauty for $2, a few scratches but still pretty! Gosh, I hope I happen onto the others!

Turquoise Delight

I've been on the hunt lately for more turquoise band dinner plates like the ones I already have here. I know they're out there somewhere! This week, I went antiquing with a friend, thinking that maybe I'd find a plate or two, since this particular three-story shop never lets me down. 

My friend doesn't collect Pyrex (yet) but she's quickly learning the difference in the patterns and whether something is Fire King or Glasbake or Pyrex. 

I didn't find a dinner plate, but I did find a lovely platter with gold trim for $2.66. That's right. Less than $3. 

 

The next floor yielded even more goodness. A turquoise chip and dip bowl for $9. Not what I'd normally pay for a bowl, but since this seems to be a hard to find piece with normally crazier prices attached to it, I took it! 

 

I've had the dip bowl for a while, although my husband has been using it for the chips instead of the dip. I'm sure he'll be thrilled to know there's a bigger bowl for chips now.  

The snowflake space saver came home with me too. My bargain buddy and I stopped off at a new Goodwill on the way home. While she lamented leaving behind a canister of chandelier crystals there the previous week, I squealed down another aisle -- I spotted the blue snowflakes hidden behind a bunch of green stuff (our local Goodwills all color coordinate their aisles -- do they do that in other locations too?) I don't know why it wasn't in the 'blue' aisle, but for $4, I clutched that thing like a baby through the rest of the store and was even reluctant to hand it over to the cashier to ring me out! 

The chandlier crystals were gone, but at least we celebrated the snowflake space saver sale. 

I seem to be on a space saver roll, but despite the name, I'm seriously running out of space for Pyrex. I really do have a tiny kitchen. For some fun small kitchen organization tips, read more here.

Pyrex Heaven!

I found it...and it's a beautiful, beautiful place.

I couldn't leave without bringing anything home, of course.

My first Orange Butterprint, Green Wheat spacesaver, Horizon Blue casserole, Charcoal Snowflake casserole (new in box!) and a {non-Pyrex} biscuit jar that I fell in love with. 

The lady working said the booth owner is constantly adding new pieces and restocking...can't wait to go back and see new goods!

Pink Gooseberry and Turquoise Snowflake

Pyrexing has been a little slow around here. Probably because I haven't been getting to all my regular stores- been so busy! But I have managed to find a couple things and they were pretty good ones, too.

Last week, I met up with a group from Retroroadmap.com and spent the day touring the Shoe House in Columbia, Pa and seeing the area. There were a couple really big antique malls in town, and I did score some Pyrex. It was hard to find any I really wanted that was reasonably priced, but I did pick up this turquoise snowflake divided dish for $10.  I know, I hate the divideds, but I do love me some turquoise snowflake, so I had to have it. Plus it had the lid; usually I never find those.

I was tempted by a set of the Honeysuckle casseroles- large and small with the large lid for $22, as well as a Cosmopolitan with lid for $12. But I am not a huge fan of either of those patterns so I didn't pull the trigger. And there were plenty of DWD primary mixing bowls and fridge sets for $75+ if anyone wants me to go back for them, LOL.

And then yesterday I stopped in to a thrift store that must have gotten a bunch of stuff from an antique store that was closing, because they were packed with vintage stuff. Unfortunately they were (mostly) charging antique store and online prices, so I didn't find much else than one lonely piece of Pyrex. 

But it was a good one- a pink gooseberry 471.

I happily paid my $3.50 for it and brought it home to its mates! Now I just need a couple of lids and I will have that set completed.

Seeing Snowflakes

I knew it would happen! As soon as I caved and bought a snowflake piece on eBay, look what I found in a thrift store:

A 1.5 qt casserole in white with turquoise snowflakes. For $5.00!

Admittedly, it was a charcoal Snowflake I bought on the 'bay, but I'm not going to complain- I love  snowflakes! And I love this size casserole- it is perfect to heat up a rotisserie chicken or side dish. 

This is actually my first oval Pyrex casserole- I have a Fire King one in this shape that I use a lot and am happy to have found another.

January Snowflakes

I know the holidays are over, but with freezing rain and snow in the forecast, plus early dark nights, I can't help but keep my lights on through January. 

I found this snowflake casserole, sans lid, for only $2 the other day at a local thrift shop. It was pretty beat up, but as per the recommendations, I used a little Bar Keepers Friend on it and got most of the metal marks off of it. It's still pretty scratched up, but I think it adds to the charm. I also think it makes me less bothered to actually use the dish in the oven -- not that I have been cooking much these days... I think the holidays wore me out!

In the meantime, I've found a few other uses for the casserole around my apartment.

The person who owned this piece prior to me obviously used it thoroughly by the looks of it. I wonder what they cooked in it? I sometimes wish they had left their favorite recipe inside -- it might help to get me out of the January cooking funk! I also wonder if someone simply picked up the piece for the holidays, then donated it as soon as they scuffed it up!

Do you ever wonder about the personal history of the piece of Pyrex you picked up -- or is that just me?

Random Pieces

A couple months ago I picked up my very first space saver. It was sitting on the shelf at the thrift store looking pretty grundgy. I got home and did a lot of scrubbing. There are still some grease marks on the lid, but considering the condition it was in it looks pretty good.

The next day I picked up this 503 Square Flowers and was able to complete this fridgie set. I love completing sets!

At the same thrit store I picked up the Snowflake divided dish and a friend gave me the Compass divided dish.

My family came out to visit at the end of May and my mom brought me my first piece from England and the 403 Butterprint in mint conditon.

She also brought me a well loved Primary set she received from a friend who found out I collect Pyrex. Now I have two sets! Her friends have found out that I collect Pyrex and now they text me whenever they're out and about. It's great.

I've spread the Pyrex bug along to my mother-in-law so when she came out to visit I took her out thrifting and picked up the Orange 403 and 404 Butterprint, Opal 402, and a measuring cup. I can never have enough measuring cups. I use them constantly. There you have it,  just a few pieces that I've acquired in the last month or so.

My Dry Spell Finally Ends...And How!

Phew! I was starting to think I was cursed. Several trips to several thrift stores was leaving me empty handed time and again over the last week. Well today I finally cleaned up (literally.)

All four of these cuties were found today. The Early American 473 was in awful condition (wish I'd taken a pic!) I honestly didn't think it would clean up at all, but lo and behold, Barkeeper's Friend came to the rescue. It now has only a few minor scratches, but no biggie to me :-)

Six months of Pyrex

I got my first piece of Pyrex last Christmas (since my mom knew I was gushing over pictures of Butterprint online) and have since accumulated quite a bit of it. Most of it is currently in my bedroom (of my parent's house) where it will be living safe and sound for the next 2 years while I am doing my thing in the Peace Corps in Senegal. I think I'll have to cram the smallest Butterprint casserole in my luggage, since i have 2, so I don't miss my Pyrex too much.

As you can see by my wall color and the majority of my Pyrex I'm pretty obsessed with turquoise. This is the majority of my collection, though I also have a chemex and a few pieces of butterfly gold and spring blossom down in the kitchen for everyday use while I'm home. Sometimes I end up hauling things down to the kitchen when I need them anyway. As you can see on the bottom shelf a few blue heaven fire king pieces sneaked in. My grandma found them in her basement, along with a dandelion server, woodlands casserole with lid, and the large oval butterfly gold casserole.

I made a lucky new acquisition today after a horrible day of yard sale failure yesterday. This morning I hit the savers closest to my house and only found a spring blossom Pyrex tea cup and a dainty 5 oz custard cup. I then found nothing at a half dozen other thrifts and antique stores when finally, at the last one, I came across these:

Sorry that the lighting is terrible. The set of 2 was only $12, which is at the high range of what I like to pay and the top bowl looked like it might be faded at first glance, but it still looked very shiny despite a few scratches. Then I all of a sudden remembered that they were from the blue Americana set which was made in a gradient of blue! Once I realized what I was looking at I snatched it up and tried not to look too excited. It definitely made all the searching/failing worth it. Now I'm going to have to keep an eye out for the big bowl. I need to start completing mixing bowl sets instead of starting new ones!
