Serial Hunting for Cereal Bowls

I recently returned home from a road trip -- and I scored some great Pyrex along the way. While I enjoy the thrill (and prices) of thrifting more than antique shopping, there really is no way to NOT stop at a number of dealers along the Interstate 81 corridor, especially when driving through Virginia!

Some of the best bargains included these blue Grecian cereal bowls:

Cereal bowls weren't even on my radar, but I couldn't pass these up. The entire booth (which was in reality a whole aisle of the antique mall) was marked 50% off. These bowls were only $4 each, so with the discount, I paid $6 for all of them!

I also found two white Pyrex cereal bowls for the same price.

I found the mug and fridge dish at a thrift store later in the day, for only 75 cents for the two of them. I was pretty excited about finding a plain white mug, but when I got it home and washed it, I saw the faint outline of Butterfly Gold. I guess someone washed this thing thoroughly in a dishwasher! It's still a good mug though.

The fridge dish only has a circle on the bottom -- it doesn't have any sort of label. I've heard that Pyrex did make white fridgies with no real markings. For only a few cents, I'm not going to worry if it's the real deal or not.

This morning's breakfast was even more delicious than usual.

Happy hunting for 2013!

    1. Thanks! I don't think the white bowls ever had a pattern (I doubled checked after the mug scare!) But they are chunkier and heavier than the Grecian pattern ones and from what I've read, they did manufacture opal white plain bowls for a while.

  3. Ha ha, I've been on that I-81 corridor in Virginia myself--it's impossible to resist the antique malls along that road. My steering wheel almost seems to have a life of its own out there! Great finds, I love those cereal bowls!

    1. No kidding. My trip took twice as long from both directions!! Have you seen the brochure listing all of those shops? They're up to 99...

  4. Those cereal bowls are great. And they're much smaller, better for portion control! (Ever notice how huge modern bowls are?)

    1. Yes! I totally agree - portion control is definitely easier with 'normal' sized dishes.

    1. Similar experience! Saw a sign for an antique mall with 150 dealers... Then got lost and couldnt find it! So, we kept going and drove all the way through back to NY.

    2. Some of those antique malls have sketchy (and antique) signs like 10 miles before the exit... and then NO signs at the exit, so they're not always easy to find. Good luck on your next trips!

    4. That's where I got the bowls! Tons of Pyrex there... Lots of it overpriced but there are definitely bargains to be found in the nooks and crannies (and 50% off booths...)

  6. Nice score for you. Too bad about the mug - but then again, I bet you won't feel bad about putting that one in the dishwasher!

    1. True... if I had a dishwasher! It's probably good I don't -- otherwise some stuff may 'accidentally' get thrown in there!
