Grandma's Pyrex

My grandparents lived in West Virginia and my grandmother passed away a couple of years ago. One of my uncles had been living in her house until he passed away last fall. Now my father and uncles have been working on closing out the house and just this month my dad made a trip back east to haul home some family goods. I put in my request: any old glassware and the Hoosier cabinet.

Here's some (but not all, this is a Pyrex blog, lol) of the glassware I got.

Butterfly Gold 501s and some Woodland that is hidden. Grandma didn't have a dishwasher and the Woodland was pretty covered in gook. It enjoyed two days of soaking in oven cleaner, outside and inside the bowls. 

The is pretty funny; my dad was unloading the trailer and opened a box and handed the 503 and lids to me with a big smile on his face. He knew I couldn't wait to get at everything. My daughter was with me and she said, "That's a Butterfly Gold 503, Grandpa!" I have trained her well. My mom aid they found this in the back of a closet. That's my mom, looking out for her daughter's Pyrex addiction. 

This pink 401 is so shiny! It was covered in ack as you can see i n this picture. It enjoyed an overnight soak in oven cleaner and is now squeaky clean and like new. It does have some nicks but they were made with love by my grandma, I am sure.

Fridgie Finds

Lately it has been raining fridgies. And maybe soon we will get some actual rain, too, as our monsoon season approaches here in the Old Pueblo.

I found these fridgies, along with the catherineholm, at the most amazing estate sale I have been to in a long while. The house was packed with MCM. My husband got up to get our number and got there a bit before 5:30---and got numbers 23 and 24. I was listening to people chat while we waited to get in and some folks had driven down from Phoenix (two hours north) the night before and camped out. The house was full of good stuff and I saw a ton of dealers all waiting to get in. I was amazed the CH was still available by the time I made it in the door. As I was taking this trunk shot a guy came up to me and congratulated me, telling me he had been wanting the CH. Truthfully I was as excited by the Spring Blossom and Daisy 501s, especially since they all had lids. It has been slow going for me to complete the Spring Blossom set but now all I need is the 502. The Daisy 501s are duplicates but they are good for trade. 

I took my daughter to a puppet show local used bookstore and spotted these on the shelf in the kitchen books section---here's the actual "Oh my, look what I found!" picture. I was pretty excited, as I had lots of trade credit from selling the store a bunch of her books she had outgrown. Just like that I completed the Autumn Harvest set in one day, continuing my march toward every fridgie set (though let's be honest, Sandalwaood will likely never happen). The random 501 is Woodland and now I really regret trading my 503 in this pattern.

It's been slow at the thrifts lately so these finds were super nice. It's super hot here, yard sales are slim to none (it's hard to hold a sale when it is in the 90s early in the morning), and few people are donating to the thrift because it is just too hot to clean! And truthfully, I have not been going out as much because it's just too darn hot to drive around.

No Fridgie Left Behind

My mantra is, No fridgie left behind. I mean it when I say it.

My husband and little miss made me go to a flea market one evening. I wasn't seeing a darn thing at a single table. I passed through one, started to continue on my way, but had my inner Pyrex radar go off. I cruised back in, straight to a dusty bin at the back hiding under a table. I pulled every duty thing out and found this Woodland 503.

Now, Woodland is not my thing at all, but "No fridgie left behind," right? I rescued it, cleaned it up, and have already traded it for a piece of Gooseberry I need for my daughter's set.

Then on Sunday we were heading out to an estate sale when we made a detour to a yard sale. Sundays are not usually yard sale days here, so I was intrigued. We live close to the university where there are some older, wealthier houses so again, intrigue. We found the yard sale, a table of goods in a dusty front yard in front of an old bungalow. I told my husband it didn't look like anything good. Then at the same time we both yelled it: "Fridgies!"

What we saw was Butterprint. Again, this was a table in a front yard. No one was out. I jump doug of the truck and pick dup the fridges. I went up to the front door. No doorbell. I knocked on the wrought iron screen door. No response. I saw the inner door was cracked so I yelled "hello" a few times. Still no response. I stood there stupefied. I thought, do I just take them and leave some money? I mean, I was not about to leave without these fridges. I gave another knock, another yell. My husband got out of the truck and started toward the backyard, and as he did so out comes the tenant, who apparently was renting from his uncle.

Well, I got my fridgies. I asked how much. He said, make me an offer. I said, $5. He said okay. Then he asked if I even knew what there were. I said yes. He said, can you tell me? I have no idea. Wow, just wow. I told him all about it and then went to the truck. My little miss had already flipped up half the backseat and laid out a blanket for me. 

This is some of the filthiest Pyrex I have purchased. My husband was talking with the proprietor and he said he pulled them out of a shed in the backyard. They had apparently been there for somewhere around fifty years. That is amazing for this part of the country. His uncle had realized he needed to clean out and was starting to sell stuff. You can bet your bottom dollar I'll be back. 

Here's what they looked like prior to a hot water bath. They came out sparkling clean. It was really amazing. The paint is bright, dark, and no scratches. The lids had nary a chip or rough spot. I'm keeping these even though I have this set. I've recently decided to collect every 501, which also means I need third 501 of the sets I am going to collect. I've also decided to start a stack of extra 503s. The 502, well, I use those all the time.

Recent Thrift finds

Hello Friends, Merry Christmas! SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

I have a few thrift finds to show you. I haven't been able to blog much lately due to camera problems, but I'm still here and still shopping, so let's catch up a bit!

I didn't think I would like Woodland, but it has grown on me. Just the mixing bowls, though. I can still pass on the casseroles and such! These were really reasonable ($8 for the three) so I picked them up. I am trying to find some solid blue Horizon bowls to mix it with- I think a blue and brown set would really look sharp. The one on the right is an Americana fall colors 403, which I definitely love. Gonna have to find the rest of this set!

And speaking of fall colors, I found almost all of the Autumn Harvest Cinderella set the week before Thanksgiving!  In a thrift store- I mean, who donates these things the week before turkey day? Everything but the rust colored 442, and they were in great condition for $12.99. I am almost done with my AH- just need this 442 and the 402 from the mixing bowl set. I also treated myself to an early Christmas present and bought a fridgie set on Etsy for a super price.

I also found 3/4 of the primary fridge set with old-style lids for $10! I happened to have an extra yellow 503 laying around, so that completed my second set of these. But I don't have the space to keep both, so these went to my booth. I usually sell only individual pieces there, so this will be my first time trying to sell a completed set. Wonder if it will sell quickly or take awhile?

I got really lucky right after Thanksgiving- I was in a little tiny town that had a ton of junk shops and found my first ever 933 lasagna pan! It was only $6, but I am not a fan of Butterfly Gold, so I ended up trading this one. I also found a red 404 for $8 which I am keeping- and don't have a photo, but you all know what they look like. I was stoked to find one because I have been *thisclose* to buying one online for a while now.

Well, that about sums up a month of thrifting! :)

Autumn Harvest - Complete!

I love the brown colors of Pyrex. 

 I had a little christmas shopping to finish up and since I was told I could not come home until I was called due to the boys wrapping gifts, I took the time to hit up a few thrift stores.

I managed to finish my set of Autumn Harvest.  I found the little 441 a while ago at Goodwill. Then I last weekend I found the 444-442 at Salvation army paied with a woodland 441. 

Score for me! I like the set all together, it just screams "go jump in the leaves."

Butterfly Gold and Woodland

One of my husband's aunts is downsizing to move closer to family and I am the happy recipient of some of her old Pyrex.  I'm getting really excited about my Thanksgiving table now!  I picked up some Butterfly Gold plates a few weeks ago when I found the Old Orchard piece, so with these new bowls, it's all coming together.

His aunt also brought a ginormous box of vintage Santas and a box of Christmas ornaments.  I see a vintage Christmas ornament wreath in my future!  xxxxxxLisa

Pyrex Karma

Hi PC3, SusieQT here from Practice in Time.

Now that the kiddos are back in school, mom gets to do a little shopping once in a while. And for some reason, the thrifting right now is great! After a few months of the doldrums, I have been finding goodies by the armful whenever I go out. I'm ashamed to admit it, but my basement is starting to look like a hoarder's. Must...get...listing...aargh...

I don't know what I did to deserve it, but I guess I have the magic touch or good karma or whatever right now. Check out my Pyrex haul from just the last week:

Yes, you're seeing all that Friendship correctly! I went to two different stores on Saturday (not usually the best day to thrift, either) and all I found was Friendship everywhere! The divided dish ($5), as well as the Snowflake Garland lid came from one Goodwill. Then I went down the road to another thrift and found all the 470 casseroles. The 471 (without lid) was $2.50, and the 472 and 473 with opal lids were $3.50 each. I thought I was going to pass out trying to get all those in my cart! I now have quite the collection of Friendship, all this plus the 444, 443 and 442 Cinderella bowls, and it was all thrifted. Which is great because I can't afford to buy it online, LOL.

Last week I went to a thrift store I haven't been to in a long time (why, I don't really know, because it is a great store) and bought the woodland 043 and Spring Blossom 473 for just a few bucks each. They are not my favorites, but are near mint, so I will be putting them in my booth.

Then last night I was on my way to work and had to stop in to a little thrift on the way- Bingo! The lime 232 was there waiting for me for $4.50. I am really loving the lime and flamingo bakewear right now. I will have to do some re-arranging of my shelves to display it better. But not today; I've got Mr. Limey in the oven baking up a peach cobbler right now!

And finally today, I just got a good Pyrex vibe after I dropped my daughter off at school and had to run into my closest local thrift. I found the Butterprint 503 with lid for $3.50 and the Golden Tulip for $3.99, as well as the Flamewear saucepan for $5. That's about as much Pyrex as I've ever gotten at this store in one shot, so my spidey sense was definitely working!

the {left behind} series

thought i'd share a few pictures of the pieces i have left behind this week...you know, in case you happen to be thrifting in southeastern manitoba. ;)

but, first, i had to share what i found today! yay! another piece of butterfly gold (for $7). i just said last week that i needed some more pieces! plus, i found my very first salt and pepper set ($0.25/ea) and it happens to be in a spring blossom pattern, which i also collect. score.

 

i would love to have this set of spring blossom bowls but at $30, it's a little rich for me. i've noticed that there are some pyrex pieces in my local thrift store that are being tagged differently...and the ones tagged differently are the ones that are expensive. there must have been a pyrex collector out there who decided to donate their collection and kept those price-y tags on them. hmmm. if they want these pieces to move, they're going to have to lower the prices!

 

an unattractive pyrex england piece that has been sitting on the shelves for months. even though it costs only $2, i don't want it in my house. ;)

these two were super hard to pass up today. one was $3 and the other was $2. and, i already have a piece from this collection but i just didn't have the cash for it today. if they are still there next week, they're making the trip home with me.

another set i'd like but this woodland set was $30.

i bought her pink gooseberry sister last week for $15. so pretty.

am not a fan of old orchard. especially at $5 for this small 401. but, there will be some very happy collector out there who'll snatch it up!

i have one piece of forest fancies but since i'm looking to get rid of it, i thought it'd be best not to pick up another one!

dreams come true

well, it officially happened. my dreams have come true. i wrote about the pyrex dream i had in a post a few months ago, and today it actually came true! i hadn't been in my local thrift store for about four weeks because i had been so upset that there was never any pyrex to be had. well, that all changed today. i found the motherload of pyrex. :)

in fact, there was so much pyrex to be had it will take my three posts to document it all (my haul, what i left behind, my current collection) so i look forward to sharing it all with you!

in this post i wanted to focus on the haul! :) i am SO excited to have found so many pieces. and pieces from collections i had never had the privilege of seeing in person!

 

can you imagine? this beautiful blue snowflake was nestled inside of a cabinet next to the cash register. it's price tag was $12 but when was i ever going to see blue snowflake again?? so lovely!

and, pink gooseberry? for real? there were actually two of these bowls but they each cost $15 so i could only swing the cost of one of them. some other lucky pyrex collector will be very happy to find the other one. :) i'm so excited to see this pattern. i've dreamed about this one!

i love autumn harvest so i was especially happy to find this small bowl for only $4 and it is in pretty good condition. the little yellow dish is unusual. anyone know anything about it? the colour was in mint condition and just the inside of the bowl needs to be cleaned up a bit. this one was $5 and totally worth it. below these pieces is a butterfly gold dish that i didn't get a stand-alone picture of. it's in mint condition as well but was only $2!! i was so excited because i specifically collect butterfly gold.

another pattern i collect is spring blossom (aka crazy daisy). love these mugs. found them in a cart in one of the aisles for only $0.50 each. and the matching saucers were only $0.10. why can't everything be that cheap?!

and a woodland gravy boat! i have a few woodland pieces so for $2 this little guy was definitely coming home with me.

 

 

i'll write more about the pieces i left behind (there were a lot of them!) and what my collection looks like today. i can't even contain my excitement right now!

Six months of Pyrex

I got my first piece of Pyrex last Christmas (since my mom knew I was gushing over pictures of Butterprint online) and have since accumulated quite a bit of it. Most of it is currently in my bedroom (of my parent's house) where it will be living safe and sound for the next 2 years while I am doing my thing in the Peace Corps in Senegal. I think I'll have to cram the smallest Butterprint casserole in my luggage, since i have 2, so I don't miss my Pyrex too much.

As you can see by my wall color and the majority of my Pyrex I'm pretty obsessed with turquoise. This is the majority of my collection, though I also have a chemex and a few pieces of butterfly gold and spring blossom down in the kitchen for everyday use while I'm home. Sometimes I end up hauling things down to the kitchen when I need them anyway. As you can see on the bottom shelf a few blue heaven fire king pieces sneaked in. My grandma found them in her basement, along with a dandelion server, woodlands casserole with lid, and the large oval butterfly gold casserole.

I made a lucky new acquisition today after a horrible day of yard sale failure yesterday. This morning I hit the savers closest to my house and only found a spring blossom Pyrex tea cup and a dainty 5 oz custard cup. I then found nothing at a half dozen other thrifts and antique stores when finally, at the last one, I came across these:

Sorry that the lighting is terrible. The set of 2 was only $12, which is at the high range of what I like to pay and the top bowl looked like it might be faded at first glance, but it still looked very shiny despite a few scratches. Then I all of a sudden remembered that they were from the blue Americana set which was made in a gradient of blue! Once I realized what I was looking at I snatched it up and tried not to look too excited. It definitely made all the searching/failing worth it. Now I'm going to have to keep an eye out for the big bowl. I need to start completing mixing bowl sets instead of starting new ones!

Recent Finds

A lot of the pieces I have been seeing lately have looked like this. Isn't it sad?

I was really close to buying this because I just love the blue stripes so much and don't have any yet. I ended up passing it up.

Then at another thrift store I stumbled upon this entire set for just $12.95. It's in wonderful shape too. It's not a pattern that I collect so I'm not sure if I want to keep it or not. I would be open to some possible trades if anyone is interested.

The last few weeks have been a little slow for me. I usually stop at 3 or 4 thrift stores when I'm out grocery shopping. They're all on the way, so I can't pass by without stopping. :) This is what I've picked up in that last couple weeks. Some of these pieces are for friends.
