Pyrex I did not buy!

Almost the end of the year. I saw so much I didn't buy. I have come to that stage. I don't want/need a bunch anymore. Do not get me wrong I LOVE Pyrex, but I do not want to have  rooms and rooms of Pyrex sitting around. I like to look at my stuff and use it. 

So here is the some last of it and where to find it.

Again I have this one. And again when I went back the next day it was gone. I don't understand why they price so high. I know they have percent off days, but some one. No one thinks they are getting a deal at $15.

Even though this is priced not as a collectable they still priced it way to high.  The funny thing is they had two other 444s and they were priced at $15 each (do we see a pattern!). Wonder why this guy, to them, is worth less. Maybe because it has a design on it? Ugg

A Rip Off (of sorts) and a Challenge {Weekend Finds}

My daughter, who usually wakes us up so early on weekends, decided to sleep until 9 Saturday so that meant no early yard sales. What it did mean is a few hours of quiet on a cool morning in the desert.

This is Modernism Week in the Old Pueblo and we had decided to go to the furniture expo. Last year we scored an amazing vintage patio set. This year we scored nothing. But, we did make a few stops on the trek to the expo.

We hit a local junk shop called Bettie Blue's. Fun fact: this shop has a ghost. Seriously. They have video to prove it. What they also have is neat stuff and some overpriced Pyrex. I saw this Early American 2.5 Q casserole for $14 ($10 for the dish, $4) for the lid. I thought that was insane, way too high of a price considering the wear (it had some scratches and abrasion), especially since this is not a super collectible pattern. Needless to say I passed. 

The next stop was completely random. We spotted a small sign for an estate sale that claimed to have vintage and mid-centry goods. We are all about both so we hunted down the place, even though it was late afternoon. The sale was still going and there were some amazing pieces but the prices were insane for the condition. There was an Eames chair that was destroyed. An cute end table with a huge chip. Some really random vintage home goods and furniture. Oh, and these Primary Colors Pyrex Mixing Bowls. I seriously think the woman stored everything outside, because not just the bowls were covered in dirt and grime.

This wasn't even how I found them (here they are pictured on the patio table I mention above). They were all nested in each other relegated to a table in the backyard. They were a hot mess. My husband asked how much. The seller said $25. I laughed. Really, I did. She said she had meant to clean them and that sets like these go for $100 on ebay. Well, maybe if they are a full set that is clean and in good shape. This set is missing the blue 401.Yes, the larger 404 can be harder to locate but sheesh, the curb appeal is terrible, don't you think? They are filthy on the inside and the outside, with dirt and grime and goodness knows what else. I mean, there are pieces of plant life attached to the bottom of the bowls. It made me so sad as most of her stuff was so amazing but so poorly cared for.

I hemmed and hawed and asked if she would take $15. She grudgingly agreed. So now I have them but I now also have a challenge. These need to be cleaned up both inside and out. Inside is easy-peasy. Outside I am not so sure. I will need to polish them up. I've looked online for tips but can't seem to find anything for the colored Pyrex like this. 

I'm sure someone in the Collective knows how to clean these babies up and make them shine like new. Ideas and suggestions are welcome!

Percolater Parts! I found them all!

I found where all those percolator parts are hiding. In a dinky town in the middle of Michigan! That is where I found all these (I didn't buy all of them!) at a flea market. 

They have bodies of percolators too.

I had a blast thifting in a different state last month.

  I didn't like having to take this all on a plane with me.

My Pyrex Update

Gosh, it's been quite a while since I've posted my finds here on the ol' Collective. Thought I'd update everybody on my collection. 

I found this vintage hutch over the summer for a steal, and I knew it would be the perfect place to store my Pyrex. Of course my Pyrex collection at the time was limited to just a couple bowls! I finally pulled together enough pieces to make a real display out of it (along with my vintage teapots.)

I'm loving how it's all coming together. I'm far from capacity, but I'll probably start to be a little more selective about what I bring home. I feel like I need a few more "wow" pieces for really make it pop!

Autumn Mix-and-Match

Don't you love how Pyrex is great for mixing-and-matching? Although I'm still kind of new to collecting, I'm loving how easy it is to find new color combinations for every season! 

Speaking of such, this is why I like brown Pyrex: it's great for Autumn! Anybody else looking forward to lots of Thanksgiving goodies baked in Early American?

I have a few of my casseroles displayed on my china hutch, just waiting for the leaves to turn!

Summer's End Thrifting Adventure

Since my kids are about to go back to school, we went for one last thrifting adventure together. My 7-year-old son, especially, is a great help and sometimes finds some great stuff I might have otherwise missed. I'll miss having him along for the next few months. I have had a bit of a Pyrex drought lately. I think it's pretty well documented that thrift stores are onto those of us that collect it, so when I do find it, it's way overpriced. But every once in a while I find some for a decent price. This Early American 401 mixing bowl was $1.97 at the Lancaster Goodwill. It's not a pattern I collect, so will be heading over to my antique store booth. Incidentally, I saw a 403 for this set today at a different thrift store- they wanted $17 for it. No thanks! (I also saw a set of Woodland mixing bowls at the same store for like $35- obviously they are still there.)

I bought this mint condition yellow 501 fridgie at another thrift store. I think it was $2. I always buy these if they are reasonable, regardless of pattern. I use them to store all kinds of things, mostly condiments and small bits of garlic, etc. And since I do collect primary, this was a no-brainer.

This was a bit of a splurge for me at $5, but I have never had a patterned lid casserole before. I do love the green color and it was in great condition underneath a boatload of grease and dirt. It's a 1 qt bake/serve/store casserole in a promo design called "Vintage" (apropos, no?) and supposedly came with a cradle, which I will have to find now! Interestingly it's from the same store with the crazy prices above- just goes to show that sometimes different people price things very differently, even at the same store!

My Dry Spell Finally Ends...And How!

Phew! I was starting to think I was cursed. Several trips to several thrift stores was leaving me empty handed time and again over the last week. Well today I finally cleaned up (literally.)

All four of these cuties were found today. The Early American 473 was in awful condition (wish I'd taken a pic!) I honestly didn't think it would clean up at all, but lo and behold, Barkeeper's Friend came to the rescue. It now has only a few minor scratches, but no biggie to me :-)

Chump Change

Good last few days thrifting for me. I asked the hubby if we could stop at a GW on the way home from a Fro-Yo outing and he dropped me off at the door so I didn't have to race to the housewares section dragging my 4 & 5 yr olds with me. :) (anyone know what i mean?)

Found this Town & Country 1 1/2 QT casserole for $2.99

I don't have any of this pattern, but I have never really loved it...and I have too many 1 1/2 casseroles, so this one is not staying with me.

I actually have a TON of this pattern, but all my pieces are casseroles, and they're brown w/gold and this one is the little bitty mixing bowl. It had no price, so when I took it to the register the lady entered....INHALE

This is my first Sandalwood piece. I bought it yesterday. Because in my neck of the woods, GW's don't do color coded discount sales, they do every Monday 25% off. 

It was all alone with no lid. and...very very faded. (but not the leaves, they are thick and shiny) abused by the dishwasher. I picked it up...I set it down. I picked it up...walked away...looked at stinky shoes, stinky shirts, and old pillow cases. I peeked over to where I set it down. And my 4 yr old said, "Momma, why is your Pyrex over there? You need it for your Colllllleckshion"(love the way 4 year olds know just what to say) My 5 yr old said, "Mom, it's beautiful."

So really.

How could I  leave it at Goodwill? It will make a good cereal bowl or something.

Oh, and the total for this beauty? $1.49

So the GRAND total of my thrifted Pyrex Extravaganza... $5.47

Recent Finds

A lot of the pieces I have been seeing lately have looked like this. Isn't it sad?

I was really close to buying this because I just love the blue stripes so much and don't have any yet. I ended up passing it up.

Then at another thrift store I stumbled upon this entire set for just $12.95. It's in wonderful shape too. It's not a pattern that I collect so I'm not sure if I want to keep it or not. I would be open to some possible trades if anyone is interested.

The last few weeks have been a little slow for me. I usually stop at 3 or 4 thrift stores when I'm out grocery shopping. They're all on the way, so I can't pass by without stopping. :) This is what I've picked up in that last couple weeks. Some of these pieces are for friends.

Hello There! An Intro by Thetoddlerwhisperer

Well Hellllllloooooooo there Pyrex Collective III. I'm your newest member! Been following for a while, then every time I would pick up a piece of gorgeous Pyrex, thought, "Hey, I'd love to share this with this fabulous collective."  This post is pic heavy, but don't we all love drooling over Pyrex?

This is me. I'm a momma of two littles...they aren't toddlers anymore, they are 4 &5. My blog is called thetoddlerwhisperer and if you visit, you can choose the label PYREX over on the right for all my posts with pretty pyrex pics.

This is the first piece I picked up when I decided to start collecting. I grew up using Crazy Daisy in my mom's kitchen. So Pyrex has always held a special place in my heart and memories. We walked into GW, and I saw this beauty on the shelf (complete with the grimy holder) for maybe $4.99.

The next week I went to a different GW and just as I told Mr Toddlerwhisperer that, "no, there's nothing here." I saw these beauties!! I spent $14.99 for the set, which to my thrifty mindset was a little much, but hey, they're so pretty!

I'm also guilty of bidding on shopgoodwill.com when I have no self restraint. (actually I didn't have a working vehicle for 4 months and had to vicariously thrift.) ya, we'll stick with that excuse.

Mr Toddlerwhisperer is an awesome cook...and he loves my new obsession  collection as well

I have blue tips on my hair. I am slightly regretting because I have an interview next week for a teaching position. (returning to teaching after 5 years of being a SAHM)

And now a question....anyone know what this piece goes to? Is it even Pyrex? From handle to handle it is 19". The oval is 13" x 9" My mom picked it up for me at an estate sale last week.

I'd like to hear what you all think. :)
