A Loss (Depreciation) and a Gain (Unplanned): Easter Surprises

It's Easter. I had hoped the Easter Bunny would bring me some Pyrex. In a weird way he did and he did not. This holiday weekend has me experiencing a Pyrex loss and a gain.

Let's start with the loss. It's not a total loss, so perhaps we should call it a depreciation.

I have a Musical Staff. Well, I should say my husband has a Musical Staff. I am not such a huge fan but I love space savers so yay, we both were happy. Then someone offered me a Friendship Penn Dutch for my Musical Staff. I talked it over with husband, pulled the Musical Staff down from the shelf and took some detailed pictures then put the piece back on the shelf, sent the pictures to my potential trade partner, and the trade was arranged. Yay! I pulled the Musical Staff back down and set it on the kitchen table, on top of a Martha Stewart Living, to pack the next day. The next day being Easter (today) we all sat down to eat some waffles and I idly glanced at the dish.

Looks pretty, right?

Then I took a closer look because something just seemed off. I pulled it closer to me and saw this:

What the what? How did that chip get there????? It was not there the night before. Nor was it present in any of the detailed pictures I took. The dish was just sitting on the table all night, all by itself. Upon closer examination it looks like there is a small black stone in the chip. At first I thought it was paint but nope, it's a small stone. Then it all clicked. There has been a rash of broken pieces pictured in one of my Facebook groups, and all were traced back to a stone in the glass. The breaks were all clean or sheared, just like mine. Some breaks were on a larger scale than mine, but still, all because of a stone.

So that means I must now write about my gain. Well, we went to an estate sale the day before and I picked up a pretty trashed Verde 502. The lid was pristine and for $2 I was wiling to just get the lid. Husband was convinced he could clean up the dish. I was skeptical, it was pretty dirty and had some white stuff on it. We brought it home and he got to work. It came out like new.

Okay, so I don't like Verde so I told him I wanted to trade it, He said, well, don't you have a Verde 501? I said yes. Then I realized I had two Verde 501s, one of which was in the refrigerator holding diced onions. Then husband pointed out I have a Square Flowers bottom in my 503 stack, and wasn't that a special Verde 503 bottom that was sometimes used instead of the solid green 503? He put it all together and voila! instant set.

He was pretty happy, as you can see, so much so he took a selfie and posted it in a Facebook group. We agreed to keep the 502 and now I have a full set.

PIA - Zucchini Ravioli

I love using my Pyrex. 

One of my favorite dinners to make is zucchini ravioli. 

I get to use my Verde 933 for the job.

 I don't like cake (Please don't shoot me) so using these big guys is also hard. 

But this stuff to me is like crack. (The food, and the Pyrex)

Oh look, hmmmmm. Snowflake Garland Corelle plates. 

It is my little bit of snow here in CA. 

I scored some other Snowflake garland this weekend.

Pyrex I left for you, again.

It has been a sad few weeks with very little Pyrex findings in my life. I have seen some but nothing that has come home with me. Oh the life of a collector. 

These had to stay at the store. The Town and Country was way to much money for one bowl marked at 12.50 (maybe I am cheap?) and the poor Verde 043 was DWD. Not even a good price just to have it for the lid. It was $8. 

I found some others but left them all too.

Red 024 hot!

Remember a few weeks ago I found a poor DWD red 024? I was bummed. Why is the red always DWD! 

Lucky for me I found not one but 2 this week. I can proudly say I left the 2nd one there. I am not a hoarder. I am a collector. I have will power. And as of this morning at 9 am the second red was still at the store. 

And I got twin servers.  I am looking for the cradle. If anyone has one to sell really cheap let me know.

Last Friday I went about my business thrifting like normal.   Must have been a day for greens.  I found many green stuff.

Pyrex in Action - Lemon Bars

Nothing says "the beginning of summer" like a little homemade lemon bar action. 

Made them in a Verde 933. Picked this guy up at goodwill a few years back. Love it.

Cleaning house, bye bye Pyrex!

Sad day but I have decided to clear out my house of some unwanted pyrex and other goodies.

 See here for sale.

Uh I may shed a tear.

Or not, leaves room for more new goodies for me! 

I may or may not get a booth at a local mall. I have been toying the idea for a while. I just don't know how that works. Anyone have any tips? 

Going for the Gold

Yesterday, I felt compelled to drive a little further than I usually do for a thrift store. It's always somewhat thrilling to go to a place I haven't been to for a while -- who knows what is right inside that door?!

The first floor housewares yielded nothing, so I trudged upstairs somewhat disappointed. Lo and behold, the Butterfly Gold Pyrex 402 sat on the shelf. I'm pretty sure I heard my name from across the room. I think I broke out into a jog. I was going for the gold. Or at least the gold on white.

I already have this Butterfly Gold 402...

 

...but I wanted the one that technically went with the 401 and 403 I already had. (I'm guessing the yellow 402 pattern was sold as part of a different set?) I've had my eye on the white one at an antique store, but couldn't bring myself to pay $10 for it. I nabbed the one at the thrift store for only $2. 

Later that day, I wandered into the local Salvation Army and spotted a blue stripe 401 bowl without a price. The cashier wasn't allowed to price it for me. Nobody at the store could price it. They wouldn't hold it for me, even though I promised to be back to pick it up after they priced it. (What in the world?!)

I went back this morning and it was nowhere to be found. I even dug through the carts. I've been collecting the 401s for my mom, since she loves that size -- and it's been fun to 'collect' without needing to find space for them! Who knows if it's still there, or if someone else picked it up and managed to get it priced before me. 

I did find these overpriced verde fridgies in the cart though. I don't think I would have normally paid what I did for them, except I was so annoyed about losing the bowl.

Rummage Sale Pyrex

I'm as giddy as a kid in a candy store right now, because it is officially yard sale/rummage sale season! I went to our town's big semi-annual rummage sale on Thursday and found some Pyrex. I don't usualy find more than one or two pieces, but last year I found a pink Gooseberry casserole, so the bar was set high. I was one of the first in the door, and made a beeline right for the housewares, seeing a spot of green on the table.

The Verde 442 (or is it Spring Blossom/Square Flowers?- according to PyrexLove, Verde did not come in Cinderella shape- anyone know?) was $3, which is astonishingly high for this type of sale.  It's not even in great condition- quite a bit of wear to the handles and utensil scratches which came out with a little BKF. It just goes to show that people everywhere (even little old church ladies) are onto those of us that collect it!

Friday I went to another church rummage sale. Thankfully the lime square baker was only $1 at that one. Apparently those little old church ladies are still in the dark! 

This is my second piece of lime (found the round cake pan about a month ago) and my 4th utility dish-  I have a flamingo lasagna pan and lidded casserole. But do you think I could find a pink or lime pie pan? No... still looking after all these years!

I've also done a bit of thrifting lately and found some really neat mugs (no other Pyrex to be found, boo!). 

First the Pyrex ones, although the Old Towne one is not marked Pyrex.

I also found this FireKing Peach Lustre creamer for $1. I am trying really hard not to collect this stuff, but it keeps jumping in my basket and coming home with me! I also found a set of 6 matching custard cups. (Sorry for the poor photo quality, our power was out when I took the picture and the outside light was poor.)

I liked the look of this one, with the eagle on it. It's quite a bit bigger even than the Old Towne footed mug, perhaps it may be McKee?

Yes, these are GlasBake, eek! Can you believe it- why didn't Pyrex make some cute mugs like this? I think there are other fruits in the set, but I only found these three plus the tennis one.

a clear-bottomed primary yellow bowl. i was really surprised to see it marked as pyrex but i believe it's one of the new types of pyrex and not part of any vintage collection.

a mini-blue fridgie with lid (my first fridgie lid!). the blue primary casserole is in amazing condition and it doesn't have a size listed on the bottom...doesn't that imply that it is quite old? just as the original primary mixing bowls didn't have sizes listed either?

{finds} and left-behinds

well, lately the prices at my local thrift store have been absolutely astronomically high. there's no other way to put it. i can't possibly be expected to pay $8 for a gravy boat or $20 for a 404, can i? well, of course, if we're all honest, we've probably been willing to pay that on occasion for that much-needed much-desired piece to add to our collections! i'm guilty too. :)

before i share the over-priced left-behinds, i'm excited to say that i found a fantastic deal today! for $9 i picked up this set of 3 verde casseroles that are all in fantastic condition. needless to say, as soon as i saw them and their price, i ran to the cash register.

i picked up this yellow over-loved cinderella bowl for $3. i could see there was still some original sheen underneath all those scuff marks so i believed i could still salvage it! and, it worked!! love it.

below, the shenandoah bowls were priced at $20 and $11. no, thanks. the medallion piece was priced at $10. not too bad for a unique piece like that but it isn't something that i wanted to collect so i passed that one up in hopes of finding something better.

and, here we have a few more pieces left for another lucky pyrex collector. the large woodland and old orchard were $9 (both were scratched up). the butterfly gold pieces together were $40! um, no. and the small woodland and yellow bowl were each $3. again, not so bad but the yellow bowl had lost all of its sheen and was completely unsalvagable. oh, well! they weren't there when i went back today so someone must've been happy! :)

Savers Pyrex Haul

My local Savers always seems to have some Pyrex in stock... it's not always in the best shape or listed at the best price, but it's there.  I try to head over there at least once a week to see what's going on, but I found myself there a handful of times over the last two weeks and managed to pick up a few pieces.

I debated on the Zodiac casserole for a few days - the gold had some cracks, it was missing the lid - but decided to go for it in the end.  The Verde Square Flowers is my first piece in this pattern, and I'm pretty into it.  The Spring Blossom Butterfly butter dish is actually my first butter dish.

 

I had never seen the Terra Cotta Rose casserole before, so I definitely had to pick that up.

 

Finally, I grabbed a 1.5 quart Butterfly Gold casserole with lid.  I rarely come across any Pyrex at thrift stores that have lids, let alone a patterned lid.

I went back last weekend, but apparently my streak had to come to an end.  They still had the same pieces in stock that I saw the previous time I went and they either weren't in great shape or I just didn't feel the need to add them to my collection.  Though that was on Sunday, so it's probably time for another trip over there!

Left Behind//For Sale!

This weekend I found quite a bit of Pyrex that I didn't buy because I just didn't need it. (I know, right? Weird.) Don't worry, I still bought some things - but these are what I left behind.

Okay, I really wanted this guy. Mint Snowflake Blue with lid, but $16? I just couldn't. It sure is a beauty, though!

I carried this #444 around for awhile, but ended up putting him back. $6 isn't horrible for him, but it just didn't call to me.

What a day for yellow/golden Cinderella bowls. I left all these gals behind: Mint #442 Butterfly Gold $3 (I sincerely dislike butterfly gold, even if it's mint. I'm sorry!), #443 yellow $4 (you can't really tell, but she was covered in scratches), and a #442 yellow gooseberry $3 (already have!)

I did some more cleaning the cupboards this week and found some more Pyrex goodies I don't need. They're on eBay if anyone is interested!

For Easter, my husband's aunt brought me this cute little Verde casserole. These oval casseroles are my favorite. I have so many now, but one can never have enough, right?

Last week I found this entire Verde mixing bowl set at a local thrift store by my house. It was just $14.95.   I couldn't leave it there, so I brought it home with me. Now I'm just missing a 503 for my matching fridgie set.

At the same thrift store I was lucky to find the blue, red, and yellow bowls to the primary set. They were all bundled together for $7.95. I already had the green bowl at home. I was able to complete another set. Yay!

Also, at the same thrift store I spotted this striped bowl. I just love the stripes, so I knew I had to have it.

There was just one catch to getting my stripes. It was bundled with these Federal Glass bowls. Do you find this on your thrifting adventures? I see this often at this particular store where they bundle different bowls together.
