Birthday Thrift Crawl 2014!

Hello PC3, SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

Every year for my birthday, I take an entire Saturday and do a thrift crawl- I try to visit as many thrift stores as I can over the course of a whole day. These are the stores that are a bit farther away, that I don't usually have time to get to during the week. This year's big event actually fell on my birthday this year, March 1st! I got to 6 stores over about 40 miles in 4 hours.

Of course, I am looking for Pyrex first and foremost. The Butterprint 401 and the unmarked green 403 are duplicates for me, so they went over to the booth. I have been looking for this green for a long time, because it enabled me to complete an unmarked primary set for the booth- I have had no luck selling them separately so will try it this way. It's in great condition- amazing for being close to 70 years old!

I found the square flowers 473 at my first stop- and it was a gold mine for Pyrex! Also at that same store I found an unmarked opal 403, and a pixie. This is the second birthday thrift crawl in a row where I found pixies, and I have never found them any other time, go figure.

I also found this sad excuse for a pink stripe 401

...but it was only 99 cents so I couldn't leave it there. And I don't know about you, but I have never seen pink stripes in person, so yeah, I'll bring it home and love it. But look what I found the next week (last week, at a different store)- mommy stripe! And this one is near perfect! Who knew? Pink stripes in the wild!

I also found this Golden Wreath 043 promo last week. It's in near mint condition except for a chip at the bottom- probably happened in the donation bin, I can only assume. I have run out of room for 043s, so I am going to list it in my Etsy store. It's nice and shiny- just hard to show in photos. Check it out!

And since you all are great Pyrex friends, I am offering a discount coupon of 20% (good on anything, not just Pyrex)- enter coupon code PIT20OFF at checkout.
 Cheers!

Sad, Sad Pyrex with Insane Prices…And a Couple of Scores

I hit a Savers on the other side of town today, hoping to find some goodies. Well, I found some pyrex, but I also found prices that can only be described as insane. I found myself wondering just what the pricer had ingested prior to affixing a price label on these items.

I admit to artfully arranging the shelf so I could get these crimes against Pyrex into one picture. What you have here is a wealth of Pyrex for my town, but not a single piece was priced below $10.

Left to right...That's a fetus bowl (once you see it it cannot be unseen). I was so excited when I spotted it as I have always wanted it for the weirdness factor. Yet it had two large chips, very little shine, and terrible wear under the handles. It was $16. The white bowl I at first thought was an opal but alas, who knows what it once was. It was $10. The bowl underneath was so DWD and truly felt chalky to the touch; it was akin to running nails down a chalkboard; it could be yours for the low price of $10. The Terra, well, it was matte but it had lots of scratches, some chalkiness, a chip, and came with a $14 price tag. The little brown 401 was lacking shine and had some marbling, it was $10.

Now, there was one decent piece I found on a random shelf after I took this picture. It was a nice Autumn Harvest 401. But I was not going to pay $10 for it, no way.

Then the funniest thing happened: two older ladies on the next aisle started going on and on and on about the inflated prices of the ceramic items they picked up. It was so funny! One clearly had the same thought I did, as I heard her say, no joke, "I wonder if the pricer was high."

This particular Savers is across the street from a mall and I can't help but wonder if its prices are jacked up as a result. The Savers on my side of town is next to a DES office and the prices are halfway decent. Saturday night I had a Pyrex itch so I stopped in on the way home from a holiday soup party while my husband and sleeping daughter waited out in the vehicle.

I found this minty 404 Verde Square Flowers for $6. I was so shocked I carried it out to the parking lot holding it high over my head like a boxer holding a winning fight belt.

I did have one other good score lately. The picture is terrible but here it is: a Butterprint 503. It was $4 and for Goodwill, that is an amazing price.

I stopped in on my way home from the gym and almost missed this. It was hiding below a bunch of dishes at the back of a shelf; how this is possible I am not sure as the price sticker was labeled the previous day. After I picked this up I spent a good ten minutes moving every piece of glassware around on both sides of the aisle looking for the lid. No luck, but I will keep checking back, as who knows, it may surface. In any case I had an extra lid so I was thrilled, as this completed my Butterprint Fridgie Set! This is my first full set, and ironically, it's not a print I adore but hey, I will take it, as my husband really, really likes it.

Sqaure Flowers!

I want to know if I am the only one here who does this.  Then I go to post on my personal blog I always come here to show you all. But I won't post if someone had posted say an hour or two before me. So I wait a day. Giving the Pyrex Community time to really read and look at all the pretty stuff. Am I weird? Like I don't want t take the spotlight way from the last person that posted only a few hours before I wanted to.

So in case any of you didn't see my personal blog post over at treasuresmyhh.blogspot.com yesterday, My month long drought has been broken.  We all know the feeling of joy when that happens.

This 503 Square flowers is what broke it. And it was priced just right.  Yeah no lid, but at this point I was happy to find anything I needed/wanted.  I was so happy, it even got a "in the car" picture.

Any of you having a drought I hope it lifts soon.

Happy Hunting

Rummage Sale Pyrex

I'm as giddy as a kid in a candy store right now, because it is officially yard sale/rummage sale season! I went to our town's big semi-annual rummage sale on Thursday and found some Pyrex. I don't usualy find more than one or two pieces, but last year I found a pink Gooseberry casserole, so the bar was set high. I was one of the first in the door, and made a beeline right for the housewares, seeing a spot of green on the table.

The Verde 442 (or is it Spring Blossom/Square Flowers?- according to PyrexLove, Verde did not come in Cinderella shape- anyone know?) was $3, which is astonishingly high for this type of sale.  It's not even in great condition- quite a bit of wear to the handles and utensil scratches which came out with a little BKF. It just goes to show that people everywhere (even little old church ladies) are onto those of us that collect it!

Friday I went to another church rummage sale. Thankfully the lime square baker was only $1 at that one. Apparently those little old church ladies are still in the dark!

This is my second piece of lime (found the round cake pan about a month ago) and my 4th utility dish-  I have a flamingo lasagna pan and lidded casserole. But do you think I could find a pink or lime pie pan? No... still looking after all these years!

I've also done a bit of thrifting lately and found some really neat mugs (no other Pyrex to be found, boo!).

First the Pyrex ones, although the Old Towne one is not marked Pyrex.

I also found this FireKing Peach Lustre creamer for $1. I am trying really hard not to collect this stuff, but it keeps jumping in my basket and coming home with me! I also found a set of 6 matching custard cups. (Sorry for the poor photo quality, our power was out when I took the picture and the outside light was poor.)

I liked the look of this one, with the eagle on it. It's quite a bit bigger even than the Old Towne footed mug, perhaps it may be McKee?

Yes, these are GlasBake, eek! Can you believe it- why didn't Pyrex make some cute mugs like this? I think there are other fruits in the set, but I only found these three plus the tennis one.

Check out my blog for some more rummage sale goodies!

The Spotting O' the Green

Hi all, SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

Well, pickings have been slim around here in the Pyrex Dept. It's been a couple weeks since I found anything worth writing about. But with Spring around the corner, people must be doing some spring cleaning, and I actually have something worth writing about today!

I am thrilled to have finally found my first piece of lime- a round cake pan. I know these aren't that uncommon, but I have never seen any! As a matter of fact, I haven't seen any solid color bakewear at all recently, and I would love to have a pie plate and square baker to go with it.

It's in absolutely mint condition- appears never to have been used. Quite a miracle, since Pyrex only made lime from 1952 to 1956. The best part was that for St. Patty's Day anything green in the store was 25% off, so I got this for $2.25!

I left behind a 402 Square Flowers bowl and a green 403 mixing bowl that I think this goes with the Square Flowers set, but it has no pattern. They weren't in the best of condition, and I'm trying to leave stuff like that for someone else! I also left two Homestead mixing bowls in mint condition, since I am not too fond of that pattern. That qualifies as the most Pyrex I have seen in one thrift store in a long time.

How has the Pyrex picking been in your neck of the woods?

Pop on over to my blog to hear about the green mug and the rest of my finds!

Savers Pyrex Haul

My local Savers always seems to have some Pyrex in stock... it's not always in the best shape or listed at the best price, but it's there.  I try to head over there at least once a week to see what's going on, but I found myself there a handful of times over the last two weeks and managed to pick up a few pieces.

I debated on the Zodiac casserole for a few days - the gold had some cracks, it was missing the lid - but decided to go for it in the end.  The Verde Square Flowers is my first piece in this pattern, and I'm pretty into it.  The Spring Blossom Butterfly butter dish is actually my first butter dish.

I had never seen the Terra Cotta Rose casserole before, so I definitely had to pick that up.

Finally, I grabbed a 1.5 quart Butterfly Gold casserole with lid.  I rarely come across any Pyrex at thrift stores that have lids, let alone a patterned lid.

I went back last weekend, but apparently my streak had to come to an end.  They still had the same pieces in stock that I saw the previous time I went and they either weren't in great shape or I just didn't feel the need to add them to my collection.  Though that was on Sunday, so it's probably time for another trip over there!

Random Pieces

_MG_6985.jpgA couple months ago I picked up my very first space saver. It was sitting on the shelf at the thrift store looking pretty grundgy. I got home and did a lot of scrubbing. There are still some grease marks on the lid, but considering the condition it was in it looks pretty good.
_MG_6992.jpgThe next day I picked up this 503 Square Flowers and was able to complete this fridgie set. I love completing sets!
_MG_7010.jpgAt the same thrit store I picked up the Snowflake divided dish and a friend gave me the Compass divided dish.
_MG_7214.jpgMy family came out to visit at the end of May and my mom brought me my first piece from England and the 403 Butterprint in mint conditon.
_MG_7222.jpgShe also brought me a well loved Primary set she received from a friend who found out I collect Pyrex. Now I have two sets! Her friends have found out that I collect Pyrex and now they text me whenever they're out and about. It's great.
_MG_7337.jpgI've spread the Pyrex bug along to my mother-in-law so when she came out to visit I took her out thrifting and picked up the Orange 403 and 404 Butterprint, Opal 402, and a measuring cup. I can never have enough measuring cups. I use them constantly. There you have it,  just a few pieces that I've acquired in the last month or so.
