Recent Finds and a Frankenset

It's been a bit since I've done a finds post, so without further ado...some finds. The last thirty-six hours yielded some good stuff.

I was at the dentist, having my routine twice-yearly cleaning, learning I have two cavities (yes, I floss, and yes, I brush twice a day, often more, my dentist says some people just have bad teeth genetics) and it would cost me just south of $500 to have them filled in two weeks when this text came in.

Husband was on the far side of the city at a Goodwill we rarely get to. He had a meeting out there and like a good Pyrex collector made some stops on the way home. He said he "saw something good peeking out of the bins they just wheeled out so I looked and saw the Bertha and grabbed it really quick while the Goodwill employee laughed." He was pretty excited and said he clutched it to his side as he made his rounds through the store. This is the first time either of us has seen a Big Bertha. It's not my favorite pattern (I'd prefer BFG, SB, or SFG) but it has a lid and truthfully I am just happy to finally have a Big Bertha. And we had just bought a ham at Costco this past weekend and now we have a new vessel in which to cook it. Husband says he is just worried his Le Creuset (what he also collects) will be jealous.

So I came home from the dentist visit of doom and took a picture of it sitting on the divided dishes I had found the day before....both at yet another Goodwill. And yet again it was a Goodwill we don't get to often. First, it rarely has anything good. Second, I know another person who goes there a lot, so I think of it as this person's Goodwill. But, this person happens to be out of town for two weeks and I was in the area running some errands so I stopped in. I am glad I did. I have been wanting the Dandelion Duet for forever! And little miss loves the scroll print, she was pretty excited about as well.

Then later this same day we went out for lunch downtown and stopped by, you guessed it, another Goodwill. I was thinking we would leave empty-handed when I saw an end cap of all green items, and hiding in the very back corner this Green Wheat. I said aloud, "Oh, hello!" which elicited some funny looks from other patrons. This is the second Green Wheat I have thrifted in less than a year and this is my husband looking handsome, holding it.

So yes, the dental visit of doom felt a bit better after this whirlwind of activity.

Other finds over the past two weeks include an opal Friendship 475 lid (I was thrilled, I had the clear printed version on my 475 and much prefer the opal); Snowflake Garland 473; Golden Acorn 548; a 475 lid (no lid left behind); an older 503 lid (again, no good lid left behind); and a Butterprint 475....so it was extremely convenient to have found the 475 lid a couple days prior.

Whew.

And now I will close with a Frankenset. I have been wanting to do an all orange refrigerator set and I finally put one together after a Pyrex friend sent me the 502, which has been eluding me for a good long while.

Happy hunting!

Orange Butterprint!

Hi PC, SusieQT here!

I had to take my son to camp this week. And it's not really close enough to home that I can drop him off and go back, so I decided to hit a few thrifts in my old neighborhood to pass the time.  I went to one in particular that has always been good to me in Pyrex (I found my starburst there, lo so many years ago for a couple of bucks). And what did I find this time? Why, only an orange Butterprint 402!!!!!

And for $3.50, it went home with me.

I also got this state glass, Florida, for my latest collection. I now have 4 (Vermont, Tennessee and Maryland are the others), so that means only 46 more to go, LOL. I also found an amazing MCM wooden wall hanging and a gravel art piece. It was a good day for both of us!

I found some killer FireKing this week, too, if you're into that kind of stuff...
Come check out my blog for more!

Pyrex Heaven!

I found it...and it's a beautiful, beautiful place.

I couldn't leave without bringing anything home, of course.

My first Orange Butterprint, Green Wheat spacesaver, Horizon Blue casserole, Charcoal Snowflake casserole (new in box!) and a {non-Pyrex} biscuit jar that I fell in love with.

The lady working said the booth owner is constantly adding new pieces and restocking...can't wait to go back and see new goods!

Come check out more pictures on my blog!

xoxo,

P.S. Do any of you fellow Pyrexians use Instagram? If so, you should follow me! I'll follow you back, with Pyrex and vintage/retro goodness. @madisonyager   :)

Fridge Dish Frenzy

I have a confession. (I feel safe revealing it here...) I think I have a slight obsession with fridge dishes. I thought I'd be okay once I got the full Butterfly Gold set.

But it turns out that was just the beginning!

I found a few Butterprint fridgies soon after, plus a pink 503 (you can see those here, and here if you missed my previous posts.) Next, I saw a lovely green 503 at an antique store. I didn't want to spend the $20 on it, but after a week, decided to pay the shop a visit again (just to at least look at it again... maybe it was on sale?!)

It had been sold, sadly. This orange one though, without a lid, was up for grabs at another vendor! More than I wanted to pay... but it was definitely less than $20, so I left smiling.

And that same week at a thrift store, I found an orange 502, also without a lid.
Be still my heart.

As if that wasn't enough excitement... I also found the greens soon after.

The smaller one came with a lid. The green one didn't (lid is borrowed for the photo) but I had to laugh. This is the same one I passed up at the antique store. It must have followed me home for only $2. There are quite a few scratches on it, and the smaller one looks like it's been through the dishwasher -- the color is very dull, but for that price, who can argue?

I swore I was done. But this week, I ran into another thrift store and spied this primary yellow 503 on the shelf, with the lid for only $3.50. I saw another lady near the shelf and I thought about tackling her for the Pyrex, but luckily she was interested in something else.

Tonight, I made a South African Fridge Milk Tart. Of course the fridge dishes were perfect for the task. I posted the recipe (and more Pyrex eye-candy!) here, on Typing Sunflowers.

The little yellow hostess dish? Spied and acquired at a thrift store. I'm keeping my eye out for the remainder of the set... it must be out there somewhere.

I think it's safe to say, I have enough fridge dishes... for now.

May your fridge finds be just as fabulous!

Orange Harvest Wheat Casserole

I check the local thrift shops frequently and haven't found anything for a couple of weeks.  I was getting ready to leave the local Goodwill empty handed this afternoon after going up and down each glassware aisle three times each.  Something told me to look around some more, so while digging around in some wire basket shelving in the furniture area I found this under some curtains and stuff.

Harvest Wheat 1.5qt casserole

This is my first piece of this pattern and I love the rich orange of it (the picture doesn't do it justice).  It has either seen very little use or was very well taken care of.  The color is beautiful with no scratches (except one on the bottom) or fading, and it was the normal price for this Goodwill $3.25.  Now I need to find a lid.

another set

i've blogged before about my difficulties finding pyrex because of where i live (in manitoba) but today, i felt like one of you! :)

i had been driving through winnipeg and happened by a salvation army so i figured i may as well stop in and take a peek to see if i could find pyrex. well, today must have been my lucky day because i turned the corner and there was some beautiful butterfly gold calling my name! i couldn't believe my luck because i had just recently decided that i needed to be more picky with what pyrex i purchase and, as i wrote about on this post in may, butterfly gold was one of them!

i grabbed all four dishes quickly without checking their prices because i was just too excited to have found them. it turns out that they were a great deal--all four of them for $17 (at least for me, and the prices i've been seeing lately, that's a steal).

(i know, i know, never stack your pyrex in this manner but it was the best way to photograph them!)

(perfect fit)

what is also a little unusual, is that the markings on the bottom of the 441 are actually different than the exact same 441 i already owned. i'm wondering if that is simply because they were manufactured in different eras?

after grabbing my new set, i decided to wander around the store a bit more and on one of their shelves near the cash register was a hodge podge of items, one of which was this beautiful pyrex england dish (it is similar in size to an 043 casserole). i've never seen this pattern anywhere before and know nothing of its name but it sure is a beauty!

The Dangers of Pyrex Overexcitement

Hello fellow Pyrex lovers! My name is Kristen and I'm new to the Pyrex collective. I've been collecting Pyrex since last December, and have amassed quite a bit already. I love seeing all of the Pyrex goodies that everyone on the collective is finding and decided that it's time to share some of my own.

I've found a lot of great Pyrex at consignment stores and thrift shops and have started frequenting the goodwill near my house. However, last week my excitement over some Pyrex find got me into a bit of trouble! I've been on a hunt for Pyrex mugs, but they kept eluding me. Finally I spotted a pair of butterfly gold mugs on the bottom shelf at the goodwill and happily brought them up to the register and got the pair of them for $1.50! Unfortunately, in my excitement (and an attempt to stop them from breaking one another since the cashier just threw them in a bag together) I somehow managed to leave my wallet on the counter...of the goodwill. Needless to say, it was not there when I ran in to check the next morning and is now gone forever. So, my lovely $1.50 mugs ended up costing me the $50.00 in cash that was in my wallet. Hopefully whoever ended up with my money needed it more than I do.

Moral of the story here is never lose your wallet in a goodwill!

Wishing everyone else happier Pyrex hunting!
