Pyrex in the Wild

Hello PC3, SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

I don't know about you, but I have been a bit dumbfounded watching some recent ebay auctions for Pyrex. Even things that are not really rare (hello, Pink Stripe 403) have been going through the roof. So with that in mind, I have decided to keep my Pyrex hunt on the ground, so to speak, and only buy things in the wild. To me, that means thrift or yard sales- I suppose antique stores would count, but I am trying to get things cheap so that mostly leaves them out.

Like most of you, things are hit and miss. I do find good stuff in the thrift stores, but a lot of times I come up empty. I go a lot, though, so I'm bound to find something one in a while. Usually I hit up 5-10 stores a week, some multiple times, but I probably only average about one piece a week. Then there's church sales and yard sales, which are also usually feast or famine- mostly there is none, but occasionally you hit the mother lode and can buy multiple pieces.

Since it's been a while since my last post, here are some of my recent ITW finds:

I found this delphite 401 and 402 at a thrift store. I actually overlooked them the first time I walked  by the shelf- probably because I was looking for patterns on white, not blue! And they were really priced reasonably; my guess is the thrift didn't know they were Pyrex because of the color. These are actually duplicates for me- of course, I bought mine online a while back thinking I would never find them ITW! The woodland butter dish goes into my collection of butter dishes- I only need the Autumn Harvest, Snowflake Garland and the elusive Sandalwood to complete them.

I picked up this Butterfly Gold 922 just this past weekend at a yard sale. I love to haggle, but I didn't even bother with this one- 75 cents was cheap enough!

These are a (very good) week's worth of picks- the Spring Blossom casseroles (475, 474, 473) were all found as a set. The Square Flowers divided dish was found at another thrift- not my favorite pattern, but the price was right and it had a lid. I almost dropped this piece in the store- somehow I caught it with my left hand at the last minute. Gah- heart attack! The cinnamon mugs are my favorite color and match my Autumn Harvest, so they will get a lot of use.

Spring Blossom just seems to be following me home lately. I have a 'no fridgie left behind' policy, as long as they are in good shape and have lids- so these joined my collection. I guess I am now trying to get all the fridge sets... ;)

I have seen the Ponderosa mugs, but have never seen plates before. Now I have two- I got these at a yard sale; the lady said her sister had worked at Ponderosa and brought them home. The turquoise hostess ramekin was a big surprise one day at a thrift store- I looked in vain for the chip bowl and bracket but it wasn't there. I have this set already; once again it is not something I ever thought I'd find ITW.

I am most happy about these two! I have never seen a pie plate and I have been looking for years. I know they're not terribly hard to find, but for some reason they had been eluding me. This flamingo one is mint and I found it in the same thrift as the Heinz promo, and also found four Fire King Blue Heaven Cinderella bowls. That was a great day! I totally stalked a lady that had picked up the Heinz and carried it around all the while she was yapping on her phone. Finally she set it down again and walked away and it was mine. I have almost bought this piece online on several occasions.

So that's about it for my recent in the wild Pyrex! It goes to show that there are good things out there, you just have to be persistent and frequent at the thrifts, I guess.

Birthday Thrift Crawl 2014!

Hello PC3, SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

Every year for my birthday, I take an entire Saturday and do a thrift crawl- I try to visit as many thrift stores as I can over the course of a whole day. These are the stores that are a bit farther away, that I don't usually have time to get to during the week. This year's big event actually fell on my birthday this year, March 1st! I got to 6 stores over about 40 miles in 4 hours.

Of course, I am looking for Pyrex first and foremost. The Butterprint 401 and the unmarked green 403 are duplicates for me, so they went over to the booth. I have been looking for this green for a long time, because it enabled me to complete an unmarked primary set for the booth- I have had no luck selling them separately so will try it this way. It's in great condition- amazing for being close to 70 years old!

I found the square flowers 473 at my first stop- and it was a gold mine for Pyrex! Also at that same store I found an unmarked opal 403, and a pixie. This is the second birthday thrift crawl in a row where I found pixies, and I have never found them any other time, go figure.

I also found this sad excuse for a pink stripe 401

...but it was only 99 cents so I couldn't leave it there. And I don't know about you, but I have never seen pink stripes in person, so yeah, I'll bring it home and love it. But look what I found the next week (last week, at a different store)- mommy stripe! And this one is near perfect! Who knew? Pink stripes in the wild!

I also found this Golden Wreath 043 promo last week. It's in near mint condition except for a chip at the bottom- probably happened in the donation bin, I can only assume. I have run out of room for 043s, so I am going to list it in my Etsy store. It's nice and shiny- just hard to show in photos. Check it out!

And since you all are great Pyrex friends, I am offering a discount coupon of 20% (good on anything, not just Pyrex)- enter coupon code PIT20OFF at checkout.
 Cheers!

1960 holiday Promo ~ just in time!

Just in time for the holiday season I completed my 1960 Holiday promo.

I found the cradle last weekend at one of my faithful thrifts.

I also happen to stop by a new one and found the cradle to the Golden Leaf promo. Now if only I could find the freaking bowl to match.  I spent a good 45 minutes in the store finding filler itms to be able to use my debit card. I was not leaving without that darn cradle.

Pink, blue and a promo

Got a few little scores last week.  Nothing much has been surfacing here. I skipped out on the antique flea market today that would have been a guaranteed source of Pyrex. I took the morning instead to sleep in as it is the first time in 5 years I could, in my own bed (kid stayed with his grandpa!) I figured someone else could use a good score.

I don't know why but the horizon blue looks so great with my friendships.

Check out the rest of my blog for more treasures.

Happiness & Sadness for my Yellow Butterprint

Hi Everyone!

I was SO excited when I received my Yellow Butterprint mixing bowls that I had purchased. They are so pretty and SO perfect for Autumn! However, as soon as my husband got home he started commenting about how UGLY they are! The nerve!

Well, I thought this would wear off and he would just accept that I loved the bowls like always does. Not even close. He is still commenting about those terrible bowls!

So I decided to bite the bullet, and just sell them :/ They go perfect with black for Halloween, or as they ar for Thanksgiving. $100 + shipping and they are yours (what I paid for them). email me at tiffanyvsaint at gmail.com if interested!

Something Old, Something Blue

Last weekend, I had a few hours to myself, so naturally I drifted through a few thrift and antique stores.

Of course I had my eye out for the turquoise plates, and space savers. (Ever since I had a lucky streak finding three space savers in a row at thrift stores, I keep dreaming. You can see those here and here.)

No plates or space savers, but I did spy this 474 on a top shelf. I actually thought it was Glasbake at a first glance, but it's definitely Pyrex. I really do have plenty of Pyrex at the moment (when you move, you realize just how heavy it all is...) but this one was just so summery and cute -- I'd never seen the pattern before. I also didn't have anything in that size, and for $3.50, I figured it was a bargain.

I later looked it up online -- I found the 1961 Bride's Promotional! I didn't get the lid or cradle, but still, I love it.

I also discovered this blue mug -- I bought it as a birthday gift for a friend. I have two yellow scuffed ones that are the same style (both marked Corning) but this one is actually marked Pyrex. Even the sales lady at the antique mall said she'd never seen that color blue before.

I think the Bride's Promotional would be a super fun gift for a bride-to-be -- especially if it was packed full of other little goodies. (Well, let's face facts, any vintage Pyrex would be fun to receive as a wedding gift!) Have any of you gifted or received Pyrex as wedding gifts?

Speaking of weddings and gifts, do any of you know if Pyrex ever made snack sets? I haven't found any information on them, but maybe I'm missing something. I'm discovering how fun and versatile vintage snack sets are (and apparently they are still popular for wedding and baby showers in the South...?) so I picked up a bunch on the same day that I scored something old and something blue. You can see those here on my blog.

Hope everyone is having great end-of-summer-sale-success!
