My Finds for Last Week - I'm in Heaven!!!

Well, the week before wasn't too eventful in that I only found one piece, but it is a great piece so I'm not complaining.  This week was so exciting I walked around on clouds for days!  Here's my haul from the thrift stores!

A few of the things that made my heart skip a beat...Hot Air Balloons 441, Mod Kitchen 043 and Friendship fridgie.  I got my very first 024 with a lid and Shenandoah 401, not a pattern I plan on collecting but for 89 cents I couldn't pass it up.  I apparently have too much Pyrex because I wasn't sure if I needed another Verdé casserole, still not sure as I have to check a reference.  I've been wanting to find promotionals and my wish came true. I sold my Bake,Serve & Store BG a couple years ago, so I went ahead and picked up another set.

Prices were reasonable and condition great on everything except the Snowflake Garland lid but hubby encouraged me to get it. The best deal was the Hot Air Balloon 471 for 99 cents!  I got it for 89 cents with hubby discount.  Most expensive (for what it is and usually runs) was the Friendship fridgie at $1.80, but no way I was going to not buy it!

I'm still giddy!

Flea Market Scores

Hi PC3, SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

I haven't been blogging much because of a camera issue, but I've still been shopping for Pyrex. Unfortunately, the thrift stores and yard sales aren't yielding much, so I stopped at my local flea market today.

And look what I found! These 401 bowls are the best patterned Pyrex I've found in a while. I saw more Pyrex there than I have at any thrift store or yard sale, which is great because the prices are low and there doesn't seem to be the competition for Pyrex like I see in the thrifts. (That's another whole issue which has been bugging me lately, but I don't want to get into that.)

The top is Horizon Blue and is my first piece of that pattern. I'm still kicking myself for passing up a complete set of casseroles in this pattern two years ago- it's so pretty. The bottom one is New Dots (of course you knew that) and is so minty! I am now halfway to finishing that set- you may remember my post about finding the yellow New Dots. And the best part of the flea market is I got both of them for $5! Which is a good thing, because finishing these sets is probably going to cost me- especially the New Dots 404.

My Thrift Store Finds in the Last Week

Hubby starts teaching today, so last week we scoured the thrifts daily while we/he had the time!  I've gotta admit, I'm burned out!  Burned some gas and put some wear on the old shoe soles!  I didn't find the things I dream of, but here's a glimpse for those wondering what was out there.

With the exception of the Crazy Daisy 401 (or old Spring Blossom pattern), everything was in good or excellent condition.  I was 99% sure I had that 401, but took it anyway.  The 401s were priced 1.99 to 3.99. With store discounts and/or 10% hubby gets--brought the prices down a little.  I still didn't pay more than 2.99 for any one 401.  The 402s were priced 1.99 to 3.99 as well.  Most expensive piece was the Town and Country divided dish I paid $4.50 for.

I forgot a piece when I took the picture...

I also got this 442 Gold Butterfly Cinderella bowl to complete my set!  That was exciting.  I also pick up Fire King Swiss Chalet when I run into it so I was thrilled to get these custard cups!

There were plenty DWDs, most notably a sad set of pink gooseberry Cinderella bowls 442,443,444 selling for $19.99!

A Serious Yard Sale Score

I'm happy to now be a part of the Pyrex Collective! Thanks for adding me, Erin!

One of my biggest yard sale regrets is letting my mom sell all her Pyrex bowls. I wish I had scooped them up for myself, but alas, I was young and foolish and totally invested in Gladware in my hip new apartment. I sat there at that yard sale and watched them sit and sit and then eventually get sold for a few dollars. Sigh. Hindsight is 20/20.

Well, no more. I am on the Pyrex bandwagon and enjoying the ride.

My "awakening" began in earnest last fall, when I decided I wanted to ditch the cheap plastic containers and vintage-up my kitchen and use real, solid vessels. Our family of three loves to go to yard sales at least once a month, and this past May was one I will not soon forget. We live in Arizona, it was already hot, and we were not not having much luck. It was late morning, yard sale time was drawing to a close, but we spotted one last corner sign and my seven-year old asked to check it out.

We found the house and parked well down the street. I ambled up the sidewalk and then broke into a run-walk move the likes of which I save for extreme sales. Seriously, I couldn't get there fast enough, because I saw these sitting on a table, all by their lonesome:

Yep, three Spring Blossom nesting bowls, the 401, 402, and 403, in near perfect condition. And then I picked them up and saw the price sticker: $5. Yes, $5. I just about died. I didn't even try to negotiate, I just pulled out the cash and sprinted away. My husband followed me and grabbed the bowls before I danced too much and dropped them. He's good like that, I needed him to hold them so I could snap the picture you see.

In the Old Pueblo we call a major deal such as this a gonga.

My Mother's 401 (Collection)

Unlike many Pyrex collectors today, I didn't grow up with a mother or grandmother who used Pyrex. It may have been in someone's kitchen at some point, but I certainly don't remember it.

But I do know that my mom has always had a thing for bowls. Whether new or vintage, there's usually been an assortment of fun bowls in her cupboards. Before I really got on the Pyrex bandwagon, I handed her a blue 401 at a thrift store and told her she ought to snatch it up before I did.

I'm still not sure why I didn't just buy it for myself -- I think it was back when I promised myself I'd only collect Butterfly Gold (ha!)

She loved the size of it and declared it a perfect fit for eating cereal or popcorn. Pretty soon a Shenedoah 401 arrived at her apartment (the only thing more fun than purchasing Pyrex for me, is finding a bargain for someone else!) Next, a very faded Butterprint, a plain white opal, and a Harvest Wheat also made their way into her kitchen.

I also saw her face when I showed her the 401 Flameglo I found, so that too landed in her collection.

Most recently, I gave her the newer design Butterfly Gold 402, since I found this one that matched my older set. I really am trying to live by my mantra of giving away something if I find a replacement. (Pyrex is often the exception to the rule, but as we're moving soon, I've been trying to do my own spring cleaning. You can read my full list of purging and spring cleaning instructions here.)

And then, while I was out at a flea market last week (despite my mom's strict instructions NOT to buy her any more bowls...), I found the BG 401 for 25 cents. How could I pass that up? The guy practically gave it away!

The flea market also yielded a big score for me -- these Butterprint Cinderella bowls. They are in great shape, and while I could have cried when the vendor told me that they had just sold a bunch of the turquoise band plates I'm after, I'm glad I at least purchased these bowls. (Even though I just said I'm spring cleaning and we are moving... what am I thinking?!)

I at least started off another friend on her collection, by giving her my spare Butterprint 442. I like to share the Pyrex love, and so in reality, I only added two bowls to the moving pile.

Have you started anyone else off on their own collection?

DWD Friendship

What a boring week here. I swear someone needs to clean out their cabinets for me and donate a bunch of pretty Pyrex.

I did however find some friendship this week. A sad sight to see.

They were cheap and they sorta look pretty still. I felt bad for them. So they came home with me. They actually look really pretty with my set of Eyes.

I also found some Irish coffee pedestal mugs. You can see them here. Maybe you have some information on them.

I hope you all the best this weekend searching for Pyrex and other awesome goodies. We all need a little help by the looks of it.
