Hi from a new-to-Pyrex collector!

Hey y'all,

I'm Sally of Exploits of a Military Mama. Having grown up with a mama who avoided thrift stores and flea markets like the plague, I have very little experience as a 'thrifter." However, after marrying a military officer straight out of college, I realized my thrill of the hunt needed to change from upscale malls to something a bit more in my reach.

I discovered Pyrex very recently while sorting through my mother's cabinets, and I adore the sturdiness and loveliness of it all. I remember both my mama and nana cooking with Pyrex, and it has since found a fond place in my heart. Over the past several weeks, I've ventured into various thrift stores and flea markets and have quickly become addicted to the heart-racing, palms-sweating feel of a great find. I thought I'd share some of my first pieces with you as an introduction!

First...my pride and joy.

I found the red Promotional piece on shelf, covered in grime and nastiness. According to PyrexLove, it's Golden Poinsettas. I almost left it (gasp!) because I had no idea what it was. Thank goodness I wised up. Once it was cleaned, it was in perfect condition. Unfortunately, the lid that came with it wasn't the lovely decorated lid I've seen several other contributers have, but thrifters can't always be choosers! The little Snowflake casserole came sans lid but was too adorable to pass up for $4.00.

I'm not sure what's going on with this Daisy bowl. It's speckled. The paint doesn't look scratched or faded, just almost as though it's supposed to be speckled. Normal? No? I have the rest of the set, and none of the others look like this.

The larger of these two bowls is actually Glasbake. Rookie mistake, but I still love it. The smaller of the two is a 401 Primary in a matte finish. Anyone ever seen something like this? The others I have are all shiny? Is it the victim of a can of spray paint? The finish is smooth and doesn't look as though it's been tampered with, but who knows?

I know there isn't a lot of love for the Early American pieces, but I think they're kind of gorgeous. The bronze is super shiny on these, and I snatched them off the shelf for $10.00 total.

Finally, this minty set of Shenandoah nesting bowls have a special place in my heart. I clearly remember my father giving me popcorn in a very similar set as a child. I'm missing the largest, but all three were only $12.00, so I am sure I can find it somewhere for less than I would have gotten a complete set on an auction site.

So there you have it. A pretty successful haul for a beginner, right?

I'm so happy to be a part of this nice community, and I look forward to sharing a few more special pieces I've hunted down recently! Don't forget to come check out my blog.

XO,
Sally @ Exploits of a Military Mama

  2. The large primary yellow appears to be matte probably because it has taken an unfortunate trip through the dishwasher.

  4. Susie, the larger one is actually glasbake and in perfect condition. The smaller one is matte pyrex, but the color is vibrant and unfaded. Can that happen with the dishwasher?
