A little catch-up

Hi PC3, SusieQT here from Practice in Time!

I haven't had a lot of time to post here, but I'm still on the hunt! I've had some pretty good luck in spots and some terrible luck in others. (Like today- drove 35 miles and came home empty-handed...) But, you win some, you lose some, and you'll never win if you don't play the game!

I got very lucky in the Pyrex/vintage glass department, and that always makes everything better! I found this charcoal snowflake divided dish with lid- it's my first piece of black snowflake found ITW. The only other piece I have is a space saver I bought on ebay. It's in mint condition and I love it!

Can you believe I found a piece of Fry glass at the pound store? Yep, a Fry oven glass pie plate with a 1915 date stamp for about 50 cents! I think it was $0.89/lb, LOL. I have enough pie plates right now (even tho this is sooo pretty) and no oven to bake them in, so this one will be for sale I think.

I also found these Hazel Atlas pretties in the discount room of a different thrift- 25 cents each! Two dinner plates and two cereal bowls. I have mixed these in with my Pyrex turquoise band dinnerware and they look amazing!

I found this Spring Blossom 2 473 the other day. I am not a big fan of the original SB, but the redesign is really growing on me. I like the small flowers! I might hold on to this one for a while to use in my spring display; I don't have a lot of green except for lime. The little chalkware duck was so cute, I picked him up for 50 cents.

I found another space saver! This is actually my second Golden Pine SS found in the wild. It's in much better condition than the first one, so I will be holding onto this one and selling the first. I love this design- it's a combo of atomic and nature, so it speaks to me. ;)

I counted up all the space savers I have found ITW and believe it or not, I've found 7, including a starburst and a rooster (with lid and cradle). I don't think I'm any more lucky than anyone else, just persistent, so they are out there, keep looking!

Recent Finds…I've Had a Stroke of Luck

I've been busy thrifting and hitting yard/estate/garage sales. It's just starting to cool down here (as in, it was 86 the other day) so the sales are plentiful, people are cleaning out their stuff and heading to the donation centers, and oh yes, I went to my first flea market (who knew there is one way out in the country the first Sunday of each month? I sure didn't). After my last post in which I marveled at the recent inflated thrift store prices I have found I was relieved to enter back into the realm of reality.

If I had one Pyrex superpower I would say it is finding lids. Here's proof…I have five, yes five, extra 502 lids, most of which are the older version. One I even got for free. That was a good day. I actually ended up finding bottoms for the two 470 lids a few days later. I amassed these lids over two weeks. I have taken to calling myself the Lid Whisperer.

I'd had a drought at the thrifts and sales until last Saturday. First up was an estate sale where I picked up the Spring Blossom, Butterprint, and Daisy. It's not the best picture but clearly I was excited. Then, that afternoon we stopped into a Goodwill en route to my in-laws' house. Finding this Butterfly Gold 501 for $1 was pretty exciting, given how much Goodwill has been charging these days in my neck of the woods.

How about some embroidered tea towels for $1 each? Or the old school sifter (circa 1950s I think) for $3? Then there's the lime 221 and 22, for $7 each. Steep, but they jumped in my cart and came home with me. I was also thrilled to find this Golden Pine space saver, it's the first one I have ever seen. The leaf is still in good shape, especially on the lid.

Feeling lucky yesterday little miss and I hit the thrifts while my husband stayed home to knock out some projects. I'm not a huge fan of Autumn Harvest but he likes it so I brought them home. Yes, that's another lid, the free one I got from random empty-lot-turned-swap-meet; I asked how much, the proprietor asked what it was, I told him a Pyrex lid, he said take it. The pixies were a fun find as well. The lamp, well, I have a weakness for lamps, I got it at a yard sale that morning. But the apron, that was my favorite of this bunch. It was a whole $2.

And here's what I found at the flea market today. The little shakers are actually mini Ball mason jars and were used by salesmen back in the day to store product samples. The cutlery is a Girl Scout camping kit my daughter got for free from a very nice vendor who found out she is a Girl Scout when talking with her.

Now, I still left a lot of Pyrex behind at the thrifts. Some was DWD, some too scratched, chipped, or abused. Some were patterns I don't collect and really don't need to haul into my house, so I thought I'd leave them for someone who really wants them. I feel like I've grown up as I used to just grab anything and now I have definitely exercised some restraint. I guess that is progress.

Pyrex road trip!

Hello all,

What a week I had last week!  It started off with a two day Pyrex hunting trip with my daughter, Kylee, and daughter-in-law, Erin.  And then on Wednesday, our beloved Pecos was peacefully laid to rest.  Please read about him on my blog The Vintage Shelf.  What a wonderful dog that will be greatly missed.  So many emotions played out during the week.

So now I have finally had the chance to get some pictures taken and write about our finds.  We headed out early Monday morning for Amarillo, Texas, with great expectations.  After hitting every possible antique store or mall, along with all of the thrift stores we came away with some great Pyrex and replacement lids.  Erin started her primary mixing bowl collection with the yellow bowl and is going to add to it piece by piece.  The whole sets that we saw averaged from $120.00 to $180.00.  I think those may be sitting on the shelf collecting dust for a while!  She also came home with three 503 refrigerator dishes to start working on those sets.  She found Pink Gooseberry, Butterprint, and Friendship all in mint condition, so she is quite excited to get started on that.

Kylee had been looking for the blue loaf pan for quite some time to complete the set and she quietly squealed when she laid eyes on it! The Golden Pine Promotional was another exciting find that is in great condition.  And who can pass up the pie plates!

For myself, I was so tickled with what I found!  I have had my eye on the Americana Mixing bowl set but every time I spy a complete set, half set or single bowl I choke on the price tag.  But the sweet little 401 was in mint condition for only $6, so I grabbed it and decided on the slow process of finding each piece.  I had the chance last fall to buy the Black Tulip casserole and didn't because of the price tag.  When I saw this happy little dish in great condition for $15, I wasn't going to have any regrets.  I also was happy to find the lime green square baking dish, only to come home and find I already had one! Oh well, sometimes you just need two.  And then thanks to Erin who spotted this little shop with no store front, the Pink Scroll space saver was just waiting!  You never know what you will find and finding pink Pyrex in Amarillo was the furthest from my mind!  It was a bit grimy with baked on stains, but oven cleaner took it right off and it just shines!

It was a great two days spent with my daughters bonding through Pyrex.  We really had to work to find some but definitely came home with some great finds and wonderful memories!  Now to plan another trip!

Have a great rest of the week,
Ranae

Finally, some Estate Sale Pyrex!

Hi PC#, SusieQT here!

It's blisteringly hot around here. I can't remember the last day it was under 100. Perfect estate and yard sale weather! NOT!

But I had a real hankering to find a bargain, and lately the thrifts have been an unqualified bust. And yard sales haven't been much better. But I decided to head out anyway and I'm glad I did!

I found one estate sale advertised about 15 miles from me in an area I haven't been to much. And the ad mentioned Pyrex, so I was definitely going to check it out. As the thermometer reached into the high 90s by 10, I packed the kids into the car and hoped our A/C was working! (It was.)

It was a pleasant and easy drive, and when we got to the sale I was shocked to find that we were the only ones there. With the kids, I don't usually have the ability to get to estate sales early, and I definitely don't want to fight the crowds with them in tow, so I always wait until after the early rush. I'm not sure there was any rush at all with this sale- it seemed like we were the only folks who even knew about it, even though it was well-advertised. I guess the heat was a factor, but it didn't bother us.

First thing I headed for was the Pyrex! I bought the Golden Pine Space Saver, with lid and cradle for $10. I have a rule to just buy any Space Saver I see, especially if it has the lid, and this is a nice one. I can't wait to get out all my Christmas Pyrex and put this one on display! The Pink Daisy 043 is my favorite size Pyrex and I love using them, but this one is so nice I might never use it. The Butterprint 472 casserole is my first of the 470 series. Didn't I just mention in my last post that I needed that, and lo and behold...

She also had the 471 and 473, but had them marked as a set for $25. That's too steep for me- why this one was priced at only $6 I don't understand, but it's mine. (I would hazard a guess that the lady was looking up prices on the internet and found turquoise Pyrex goes for more; apparently she didn't get to the part where the turq. on white Butterprint goes with the others...) I also left behind a Golden Tulip promo with lid and cradle for $20 and a set of primary bowls (minus the green) for $20. I didn't love the tulip and have an unnumbered primary set, so at those prices they're not a bargain for me.

I got a ton of other stuff- check out my blog for more!

Mother's Day Pyrex Brunch

I'm anti-take-your-mom-out-for-mother's-day. (You can read why here.) So this year, I made my Mama brunch -- using Pyrex, of course.

And speaking of holidays... I just nabbed this lovely Golden Pine spacesaver promo (without the lid) for only $1!

I went on eBay right afterwards to see if I could find a lid for it. I just searched for plain lids when the matching one came up. I'm so glad I saw it -- I didn't even know this one had a special lid! I paid a little more than I wanted to for the lid, mainly due to shipping costs, but I justified it because the space saver was only $1.

AND, I saw this listing and knew my lid was a total bargain in comparison. Seriously?! $32.99 for the LID?

I love Spring, Summer and Fall, but I'm definitely looking forward to using these space savers throughout the winter holidays. (See more of this Green Wheat Space Saver here.)

Whether you are a mom or not, I hope you've enjoyed the weekend!
