A Little Daisy to Brighten My Day

It's been a bit dry here lately for me, what with my ban on antique malls and eBay/etsy and my other rule to only take what I need and/or can trade. But, there have been a couple of good finds….

Pink Daisy Open Baker 

This is the second one I have found in the wild. I passed one by at an antique mall only to regret it, go back and get it, it was gone, so I bought one on eBay. Ouch. Now I find this one you see at an upscale thrift (read: charges more because it is clean). I was surprised to find one at a somewhat reasonable price, but I am not complaining. I am going to trade this, I don't really need two though they really are great for baking things like stuffed shells and manicotti.

Daisy 471, 472, 473 with Opal Printed Lids

My husband is an architect and works for himself, I manage the books. All that to say I am often out and about picking up prints, going to the bank, business things. This allows me to make many thrift stops throughout the week without feeling as though I am wasting a bunch of gas. On my last print run I stopped into a thrift I don't normally visit. Maybe I was bored, I don't know, maybe I just had some Pyrex intuition, or most likely, it's the good vibes others have been sending my way. Anyway, I was happy to find these Daisy casseroles. I already have the 474 with the clear printed lid. I had no intention of collecting the Daisy pattern but I guess the Pyrex gods have a different plan.

Latest Finds (Hint: My Heart Raced)

I did some hunting this past Thursday and Friday. Thursday my husband went in to a Goodwill while he was out and about on business and found a Pink Daisy 043; I already have one so I am going to try and trade it for another piece on my wish list. That same day the owner of one of my favorite "hidden" junk shops (she keeps a list of things people are looking for, and you know I am in it) called and told me she had "some blue pyrex with little people" and did I want to come take a look? Well yes, I did. Even though I am not a huge fan of Butterprint I know I can trade it later on. The Pink Daisy Open Baker was amazing! I am awaiting a trade for the 045 in this print an then, I am happy to say, I will have every Pink Daisy piece. I can't pass up a 503, especially with a lid, so the Spring Blossom jumped in my cart and came home with me.

Yes, a Black Rooster 575 SpaceSaver.

My husband and I had gone out to lunch for Valentine's Day, once again to our favorite restaurant. On the way home we hit some thrift stores, just as we had done the previous week after having lunch on Friday at this restaurant. Do you see a trend here? Last week I found my Snowflake Open Baker, this week, the Black Rooster. I told him we will have to keep going back every Friday, it is a lucky charm.

Anyway, he waited in the car while I ran into the thrift. I almost passed out when I saw it on the shelf. I grabbed it and clutched it tightly, then took a picture, then flipped it over for the price: $4. Well, it just so happens that it was customer loyalty card day, so I saved 25%, making it a grand total of $3 and change for tax. My heart was racing so fast! I went out of the store, crossed the parking lot in my patented "I am so excited with my find so I will run-walk" to my husband in the car, and started kind of yelling to get my husband's attention. He looked up, I held up the dish, cracked a huge grin, got in the car, and just kind of did a little OMGing in a very excited manner.

Finally, some Estate Sale Pyrex!

It's blisteringly hot around here. I can't remember the last day it was under 100. Perfect estate and yard sale weather! NOT!

But I had a real hankering to find a bargain, and lately the thrifts have been an unqualified bust. And yard sales haven't been much better. But I decided to head out anyway and I'm glad I did!

I found one estate sale advertised about 15 miles from me in an area I haven't been to much. And the ad mentioned Pyrex, so I was definitely going to check it out. As the thermometer reached into the high 90s by 10, I packed the kids into the car and hoped our A/C was working! (It was.)

It was a pleasant and easy drive, and when we got to the sale I was shocked to find that we were the only ones there. With the kids, I don't usually have the ability to get to estate sales early, and I definitely don't want to fight the crowds with them in tow, so I always wait until after the early rush. I'm not sure there was any rush at all with this sale- it seemed like we were the only folks who even knew about it, even though it was well-advertised. I guess the heat was a factor, but it didn't bother us.

First thing I headed for was the Pyrex! I bought the Golden Pine Space Saver, with lid and cradle for $10. I have a rule to just buy any Space Saver I see, especially if it has the lid, and this is a nice one. I can't wait to get out all my Christmas Pyrex and put this one on display! The Pink Daisy 043 is my favorite size Pyrex and I love using them, but this one is so nice I might never use it. The Butterprint 472 casserole is my first of the 470 series. Didn't I just mention in my last post that I needed that, and lo and behold... 

She also had the 471 and 473, but had them marked as a set for $25. That's too steep for me- why this one was priced at only $6 I don't understand, but it's mine. (I would hazard a guess that the lady was looking up prices on the internet and found turquoise Pyrex goes for more; apparently she didn't get to the part where the turq. on white Butterprint goes with the others...) I also left behind a Golden Tulip promo with lid and cradle for $20 and a set of primary bowls (minus the green) for $20. I didn't love the tulip and have an unnumbered primary set, so at those prices they're not a bargain for me.

Pyrex Success, Large and Small

I had a very good day thrifting yesterday! It didn't start out very well, though- I actually left the first two stores empty handed. And my daughter, who's almost 5, had a meltdown in the third store. But not until after I had found my first ever piece of pink daisy!

 

Normally I am not a big fan of the divided dishes. I have 4 of them now and they are a pain to display since they don't nest. As a matter of fact, I don't have any of them on display at all right now. But no way was I going to leave this one behind! It is in mint condition- not a scratch or chip anywhere- probably never been used. This is also the first divided dish I have found with a lid. You can bet I will find a place to put this one on the shelf with all my pinks!

So even though my daughter was throwing a fit in the store, I was as happy as a clam.

At the next stop, we got her calmed down (she really wanted me to buy her a certain stuffed polar bear, and there is no way I'm bringing used stuffed animals into my house) and I happened to find something I have been needing for a long time now:

Yes, a simple little red 501, with no lid and quite a bit of wear (although no DWD) for $2. This might have made me happier than the pink daisy...

Because I have now completed my primary fridgie set!!!! This is the first set of any pattern that I have completed (I'm really close on a couple of others, too.) I started this set with a single red 501 at least 8 years  ago, and got everything in the wild, nothing online. I'm kinda proud of that and happy that I waited, because I think the whole thing cost me less than $20.

Now I have a bit of a space problem, but that's not a bad problem to have. These are my finds from the last couple of weeks, and I haven't yet figured out how to get them all in the cupboard! :)

Pink Daisy

Ever since I purchased my first vintage Pyrex piece, I have been scouring the Internet for information. I wanted to be able to tell people what the thing was called, what era it was from, and the original price. 

I came across the Pyrex Collective where I discovered I was now the proud owner of a Pink Daisy casserole dish. 

I've been following the Collective, and other Pyrex junkies, for a while now and I'm tickled pink to be an author on this newest one. 

I remember thinking that $5 was a lot for a casserole dish (!) when I purchased this little gem. I live in an area of the country where antiques shops and thrift stores thrive. It's not unusual to pick up generic casserole dishes for only a buck. 

Of course, this was no generic dish. I discovered this advertisement from 1956, where my 1.5 quart casserole was listed for only $4.50! I figured if people paid that much over 50 years ago, then $5 was a steal for today.

Since acquiring that first piece however, I have become somewhat obsessed with Butterfly Gold and any refridgerator Pyrex. On several occasions, the Pink Daisy dish has almost found its way out the door, heading to another thrift shop to make some other collector happy. (I have what seems to be the smallest kitchen in America. I covet some of your collections posted here but I have no space to store the stuff.) It doesn't match anything else in my kitchen plus I haven't seen enough pieces available around here to start collecting this pattern.

But I can't seem to part with it. Not just yet. It reminds me of the day I discovered Pyrex for its true worth.
