Price Inflation Insanity

Spotted this morning at an estate sale….glad I did not get up at the crack of dawn to get it!

That's a pink gooseberry 442 for $20. Yes, $20. Notice the sticker says "VTG;" yes, it is older, but not worth $20, not even at an antique mall. Usually estate sales are no higher than $10 a bowl. I'm telling you, I fear for the future, as it will only get more expensive from here on out!

  1. I was at an antique mall over the weekend, and never saw so many different and pretty Pyrex bowls. They were not cheap.

  2. Sounds about right for some antique malls, at least around here, if in mint condition. Usually $65 or more a set for pink Gooseberry.

$28 for a scratched to hell 444 pink Gooseberry. Next time I was there, it was gone.

  3. I guess I was just shocked to see this price at an estate sale! I don't expect rock bottom prices like at a yard sale but usually at estate sales things are priced to move. My MIL and FIL went back right before it closed to pick up some things at half off and even at $10, this bowl was still there!

  4. My friend goes to estate sales regularly. She has gotten to know the estate sales people and the dealers that come. It's like that. The companies that hold the sales many times jack up the prices. I just go to the thrifts and settle for what I can find there at reasonable prices. I would have picked it up for $10 though if it was in good shape.

  5. I went to an antique mall this weekend keeping an eye out for pyrex at affordable prices. Plenty of pyrex, but not in my budget. However, I came home with a whole bunch of Glasbake, in great condition for waaaay less than pyrex. I'm talking a lasagna pan in good condition for $5, a square brownie pan for $3. Glasbake was an early competitor of pyrex and is, in my mind, almost as alluring. The only downside is I haven't yet found any resources out there that identify all the styles and patterns the way so many websites and books do for pyrex. But if you need a fix and are fed up with pyrex prices ... there's Glasbake. Just sayin'.

  6. Estate sales in Chicago are very well aware of the price of Pyrex, I have actually never bought from estate sales. I actually came across a nearly mint set of pink gooseberry bowls (minus the smallest) at a thrift store for $50. I did end up buying them because they were right there, and I knew I would never find them again and they were #1 on my want list. I felt really guilty as I was verifying to them that yes, someone actually would pay that price. Sigh.
