Sad, Sad Pyrex with Insane Prices…And a Couple of Scores

I hit a Savers on the other side of town today, hoping to find some goodies. Well, I found some pyrex, but I also found prices that can only be described as insane. I found myself wondering just what the pricer had ingested prior to affixing a price label on these items.

I admit to artfully arranging the shelf so I could get these crimes against Pyrex into one picture. What you have here is a wealth of Pyrex for my town, but not a single piece was priced below $10.

Left to right...That's a fetus bowl (once you see it it cannot be unseen). I was so excited when I spotted it as I have always wanted it for the weirdness factor. Yet it had two large chips, very little shine, and terrible wear under the handles. It was $16. The white bowl I at first thought was an opal but alas, who knows what it once was. It was $10. The bowl underneath was so DWD and truly felt chalky to the touch; it was akin to running nails down a chalkboard; it could be yours for the low price of $10. The Terra, well, it was matte but it had lots of scratches, some chalkiness, a chip, and came with a $14 price tag. The little brown 401 was lacking shine and had some marbling, it was $10.

Now, there was one decent piece I found on a random shelf after I took this picture. It was a nice Autumn Harvest 401. But I was not going to pay $10 for it, no way.

Then the funniest thing happened: two older ladies on the next aisle started going on and on and on about the inflated prices of the ceramic items they picked up. It was so funny! One clearly had the same thought I did, as I heard her say, no joke, "I wonder if the pricer was high."

This particular Savers is across the street from a mall and I can't help but wonder if its prices are jacked up as a result. The Savers on my side of town is next to a DES office and the prices are halfway decent. Saturday night I had a Pyrex itch so I stopped in on the way home from a holiday soup party while my husband and sleeping daughter waited out in the vehicle.

I found this minty 404 Verde Square Flowers for $6. I was so shocked I carried it out to the parking lot holding it high over my head like a boxer holding a winning fight belt.

I did have one other good score lately. The picture is terrible but here it is: a Butterprint 503. It was $4 and for Goodwill, that is an amazing price.

I stopped in on my way home from the gym and almost missed this. It was hiding below a bunch of dishes at the back of a shelf; how this is possible I am not sure as the price sticker was labeled the previous day. After I picked this up I spent a good ten minutes moving every piece of glassware around on both sides of the aisle looking for the lid. No luck, but I will keep checking back, as who knows, it may surface. In any case I had an extra lid so I was thrilled, as this completed my Butterprint Fridgie Set! This is my first full set, and ironically, it's not a print I adore but hey, I will take it, as my husband really, really likes it.

Pyrex underneath the Pyrex Christmas tree

Many of us have that special Pyrex piece on our Holiday list this year. I know I do. We search all year long to add to our collections with the hope that we will come across that special piece. Wouldn't it be great if Santa delivered this year?

Several months ago I entered a contest where I was able to use my Pyrex in fun, creative and funky ways. This is one of my submissions, followed by my seasonal Pyrex display. Enjoy!

I am also a big fan of vintage holiday decor and have committed to posting something new everyday on my blog. A countdown with vintage Christmas at cherrypickedfinds.blogspot.com Come join in the fun and follow along!

Holiday Cheer

Happy December everyone! This is one of my favorite months. I love the holiday cheer and the holiday Pyrex that goes on display this time of year! I just acquired my first piece recently as an early gift to myself (admittedly from Ebay...thrifting here has been dry as a bone lately). I purchased the 1960 Holiday piece and I'm displaying it prominently in my kitchen. Here's a lovely photo of one that's for sale right now on Etsy from vintage seller BrooklynStVintage:

In case you were wondering, I don't know this seller or have any vested interest in promoting her wares. I just love her pretty Pyrex photos!

In other news, I wanted to let this community know that I'm hosting a giveaway over at my blog (foresthillsvintage.com) this week. I'm giving away this lovely Radko reproduction sparkle house:

I know that many of us here at the Pyrex Collective love all things vintage, not just Pyrex. If you have a soft spot for vintage and vintage style Christmas decor like I do, then I encourage you to enter the giveaway!

My Thrift Store Finds and a Pink Freebie!

I've been going to the thrifts A LOT lately in search of vintage Christmas stuff.  Naturally, I hit the cookware in search of Pyrex when I'm there.  It's been pretty dry mostly.  There was a day that one thrift had a blue Snowflake divided (I have that), a Woodland 403 (didn't want it) and some other smaller pieces in patterns I have that weren't in good shape.  I managed to find a few things and was given a piece by another neighbor who I more recently accompanied to my first estate sales.

Yes--it's true, I got a Pink Scrolls from my neighbor!  I couldn't and still can't believe it.  I didn't think one of these would ever be in my future.  It was so nice of her, she had to endure my screeching.  Also I found an old turquoise baker.  First solid piece of turquoise I've ever found.  It has some hard baked on stuff around the bottom that is hard to get off.  I let it soak and scrubbed, but it's stubborn.  There is also yellow film on part of the paint--but the paint is very shiny and hardly a scratch.  I'm wondering if I should try the oven cleaner.  I'm going to put the orange 043 with my Friendship as I don't have an 043 casserole, I suppose this could have also been a Daisy 043, but I already have one of those.

I also scoured the thrifts for vintage Christmas decorations.  I posted a bunch of stuff on my blog along with my latest wreath #4 if you like that kinda stuff here.

(Hopelessly addicted),

PIA - Thanksgiving 2013

So I anticipate there will be many Pyrex in Action posts due to the American Thanksgiving yesterday.
I love cooking my Pyrex.

This is one of the few times I use my Napkin rings. They are one of my favorite Corelle items.

And of course I used a variety of different patterns.  From Snowflakes to Verde and Old Orchard. I used a little bit of everything some love on my table.

Everything tastes better in Pyrex, don't you agree?

Happy Turkey Pyrex Eve

Thanksgiving is here and officially begins the busy holiday season. We will gather around tables stuff our faces, nap to backgrounds of football and movies. It is one of the best times of year.

Those are not the only reasons. There is Pyrex of course and the opportunity to put to use on a larger scale my collection. The 404s are great for mixing up a big batch of my grandmas yeast rolls. The pie plates, the casseroles, the divided dishes, fridgies, the Pyrex possibilities are endless.

Recently I had a small resell score. I rewarded myself by purchasing the remaining dot bowls online to complete my set. I also, picked up this 1940s Pyrex Thanksgiving store advertising display. I think it might be one of my favorite pieces. I love old advertising and the way it lets you look through the window of time.
Have a wonderful Pyrex filled Thanksgiving everyone! Check out the rest of my vintage turkey day decorations at cherrypickedfinds.blogspot.com

1960 holiday Promo ~ just in time!

Just in time for the holiday season I completed my 1960 Holiday promo.

I found the cradle last weekend at one of my faithful thrifts.

I also happen to stop by a new one and found the cradle to the Golden Leaf promo. Now if only I could find the freaking bowl to match.  I spent a good 45 minutes in the store finding filler itms to be able to use my debit card. I was not leaving without that darn cradle.
